The cpu i'm installing on is a desktop with windows 98
not sure but computers do stop responding during Setup because of failed or failing hardware, and incorrect or outdated BIOS (basic input/output system) settings. Checking your hardware settings and drivers and updating your BIOS usually solves these problems, don't hold me to it this might not be it, i'm just saying these are the typical cases, you should also check your hardware and make sure its compatible good luck [/b][/quote]
MUSLEMAN is right. You need to update your BIOS and check your hardware's compatible with XP.

Updating your BIOS will probably solve it. I had exactly the same thing happen on a friends machine where it would hang after the first reboot. If you're not sure about how to do this, http://www.wimsbios.com/ is a great site. Be sure to post again if you any further problems.

Good Luck.

go into ya bios and if it has the option to restore failsafe settings enable it, this will turn off any advanced settings that may be causing issues, you can always enable it after you have got it to boot. also try taking things out of your pc like modems, tv cards etc that are known to cause issues with setup in xp. as before you can always put them in after you get it to boot for the first time. also try booting in safe mode, just after first bios screen but before the windows screen hit f8 and a menu will come up, select safe mode, let windows open then shut down it down and restart.

Thanks a lot guys,

It ended up finishing the install after 3 attempts to reboot without the cd.

With the cd in it would just freeze on black.

Without the cd in, it froze the first time. Then it froze on a loading screen (black screen with white squares on the bottom showing the load progress) Finally it booted into the GUI XP install interface and went no problems...

Thanks again
