I thought the same thing as soon as I read they'd completely wiped their database. My guess is that there are backups (off-site backups are essential), but staff don't feel like restarting the site on another host and don't trust anyone else with their data, which is the same as nothing. I would be pleased to be proven wrong, however.

It matters to some more than others. I've had times in my life where my online activity was far greater than my real life activity. Not a good place but it is what it is (or was in this example). People take these things to heart, first world problems indeed.
