Good emo bands...

Hot Rod Circuit, Alkaline Trio, Get Up Kids, Thursday, Hot Water Music, Appleseed Cast, and some more that I can't think of at the moment (i'll try and add)...

    Awful emo bands...

Dashboard Confessional = Stay away at all costs. This fool singalhandedly sold out the genre, with all his bullshit "emotional acoustic" songs. I mean, come on, he put out an "unplugged" cd, WHEN HE PLAYS A F*CK*NG ACOUSTIC GUITAR!!! He deserves to die.

all the 46534545656 other bands are either generic pieces of shit, or just plain bad = Spitalfield, Story of the Year, From Autumn to Ashes, Glassjaw, Senses Fail, and oh so much more

And a few things to know...

You hear the band "Saves The Day" thrown around alot. They BASICALLY ripped off a little old band called Lifetime, who you just might want to check out. Yet, their old cds still have a few really good songs on them (cds as in "cant slow down", and "through being cool", and random comp songs as in "drag in d flat"), but, every other song that they put out, besides the ones listed, are pitiful excuses for music. You can only rip off a band for so long, before your balls fall off and you start to suck...

You're also going to hear about Coheed And Cambria alot. Ok, the guitarists are absolutly incredible, yet, the singer sounds like michael jackson!!! If you can get into them, fine, yet it can't stand the fool...

Some REALLY good emo bands off of the top of my head include:

Mock Orange, Mineral, The Gloria Record, Penfold, Jimmy Eat World (anything off of clarity), Go Big Casino, Further Seems Forever, The Juliana Theory, Bear vs. Shark, The Mars Volta, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Taking Back Sunday, Sparta....

    ETC.

The bands will go on forever...

That's the funny thing, most people would classify The Mars Volta as Prog Rock, even the band members.

Gutter - I don't think anyone could tell you who are and arn't an emo band. If you look at the bands who were labeled as emo in the early 90's (Sunny Day Real Estate) and the emo bands of today (Finch), you'll see they completley sound different. so how could they be categoriesed in the same genre?

agreed, I think No Doubt has changed their genre as well as smash mouth from the sound on their first albums up to their latests.

    I still hate genres

    Labels are for cans

I think early NoDoubt was cool,
but now they sound a bit too top40 for me.
Or maybe i've heard the songs too much lately in the Radio,
that totally Kills some songs for me sometimes, even if i liked them at first.

That Padrino (smashs mouth) song is the Ultimate Party song around here,
me and me buddys get all hyped up on that one, works every time.

edit: forgot to mention, Cool point about the Cans

I think "Party" could be a new genre for bands like smash mouth, no doubt, sugar ray, baha men. those bands that always play radio friendly music. (mickey mouse)

not that I'm starting to enjoy genres though.

i actually like their current sound more than their earlier stuff...

but aside from the change in sound, i think the quality of their songwriting has improved. their last several singles have had much more memorable melodies, imho.
