Yep, VB hit the nail on the head there.

And also, for things like dual channel, and usually any second or 3rd stick of ram should be as close as a match to your first stick.

Thats also why they sell 'matched stick' sets on places like newegg, for more money than buying two stick individually. Usually because they have been tested, or specfically picked out to go with their counterpart.

That means its' better to have two sticks of 256 MB than on with 512 MB, right ?

If I want to upgrade my RAM (from 256 MB to 512 MB), do I have to buy the same two sticks (or one stick) of PC800 RDRAM that I already have,or can I combine my current RDRAM with an additional stick (or two sticka) of 256 DDRAM ?

RDRAM has to be used in pairs. Always. No choice.

With some DDR mobos, it is more efficient to use them in pairs, but is not necessary for successful operation. This is because some chipsets handle dual channel ram with a true dual channel controller, which means you can use a single stick. Others use two single channel controllers which means you need a stick of memory for each controller. If you only have one stick then only one controller is used.
