easy solution: keep your buddy list short, and tell your less important contacts that you don&#39;t "do" instant messaging.

Kidding aside, I really don&#39;t do instant messaging. Well I do have skype installed for long distance phone calls with family.

And i know that with the latest IM, you can just set up an away all the time, and to where it does open up new windows, it keeps them hidden till u use them.
