I know about linuxant. I knew about Linuxant when they offered their drivers for free I guess it comes down to do you really want to waste your time trying to install a driver for a winmodem. Most people do not even have the ability to get a working graphical interface up on their Linux box, let alone install a driver for a modem and tell their box what serial port it's on. And why pay for a driver when you can go and buy a compatible 56k modem for less than $10 bucks.

And like I said...................they don't work under linux. Your talking about a driver, anything will work if you have the right driver.

From Linuxant's site.

a free version (limited to 14.4Kbps data)
14.4kbps? That link was not even worth posting dude.
Hmmm... Why the sudden need to go on the offensive shn?

My entire point was that it IS possible to get a Conexant Winmodem functioning in a Linux environment.
If it were otherwise, then Linuxant would have folded inside 6 months of opening thier doors to retail buyers.

You seem to have contradicted yourself in the space of 2 short sentences here.

Yes. I'm painfully aware of that poxy freeware driver limitation.

I'm one of the unfortunates who got suckered into buying a Conexant winmodem back when I purchased my original system as a rank n00b. To have to pay to get my modem working in Linux remains a sore point to this day, and is something I refuse to do.

14.4kbps? That link was not even worth posting dude.
I disagree. The link was posted to simply prove my point and show the irony I mentioned.
So spare me your disdain, and look to your mirror for the true of the piece.

So. It IS possible to run Conexant Winmodems with Linux...
...even if it is a pain to do so, and the scumbag company that wrote the driver wants to charge users for the fully functional package.

Thats all.

Peace.

Do the words butcher mean anything to you? People must really be trying to get their point across when they take your whole post and slice it up in little quotes.

Arrrrg! I hate that.

And what makes you think I am so offensive. I hate to see people misinformed.

It's like saying..........."ummmmm that person really has no idea what their talking about but I'm going to go ahead and let the other party be misinformed by your expertise."

I have no problem with you giving your advice or opinion.......but when you quote me you better be ready to back it up!

And this is Linux Section. You come in here you need to know your stuff.

Here is handy link for ya. Maybe you can turn your winmodem into a linmodem.
Winmodems are not modems

Yeah, you're right. Sorry about the chop job, I just wanted to be clear about the points I was making.
We've talked before and you ended up taking what I was saying completely the wrong way.
I didn't want a reoccurrence of that here. But instead, it looks like I found a whole new way to bug you, huh?

I certainly don't consider myself to be an all-knowing guru, (far from it, actually) but I did do a decent amount of research while trying to get my POS winmodem working in Linux. I ended up deciding to wait until I get ADSL and a router before I try surfing with the penguin.

I've seen that site you linked to already... In fact it was there I found out about Linuxant.
As for your comments appearing to be on the offensive, heh well, I guess you can blame him --> for that.

My favorite question from the site

Winmodem Mini-FAQ

2. Oops, I bought a Winmodem. Will it work with Linux?

Not without some effort. A Winmodem requires software to emulate the hardware missing from the modem card. For some winmodems, such as the 3Com/US Robotics Winmodems, this software is only available for Microsoft Windows. For most others, there are groups adapting proprietary drivers to function as "Linmodem" drivers.
I've opted for simplicity in Linux Section. When I said winmodems do not work under Linux it was intended with n00bness in mind. When I was on dial up I had no problem at all getting my hsf conexant modem working under Linux, but then again I knew enough already about Linux to get it working.

I think you misinterpreted my post. The bottom line is yes it will work, but as we can see for someone of your Linux knowledge it did not work for you.

Also, when you give advice like that, it's a great idea to be fully prepared in case it does not work for that person. But how can you recommend something as advanced as that and it did not even work for you? What are you going to do when that person says "hey that did'nt work can you help me out?"

Are you just going to give them a link or will you provide them with results based on your own experiences?

I suppose it would be a good idead to get a winmodem working on your own box before you recommend the idea to someone else.

Linuxant? What a waste. I can not believe they charge for the drivers now. I think I still have some hsf rpm's that I burned to a disk for backup long time ago but their only redhat (which I no longer use) rpm's. If you ever run redhat and want to give your modem another try I'd be glad to help. It's fairly easy once you get the hang of it.

I apologize if I was offensive in any way. I found myself a wee bit strange having a 56k debate from a broadband user's perspective.

Thanks for the offer of help shn, I appreciate it.

I'm currently doing Cisco's A+ Hardware at my local college. We're going to be studying Linux systems next term, so expect to see more of me in LinuxWorld.

I must clarify one point while I'm here:
Just because I dropped that Linuxant link, it wasn't intended to be a recommendation to use those particular drivers.
It was just posted to prove Winmodems can work in Linux. Nothing more.

Yep. I'll admit right now that I gave up trying to get my modem working because I didn't know enough about the Linux environment.

So my answer to anyone asking what they should do to get a winmodem working in Linux:
"Don't bother... get a proper modem instead."
