Also do as others do and only allow guest access at top level - show 'em what's being discussed but not the actual posts.

Natural curiosity will do the rest.
Agreed, let them see the pinned topics and tutorials but don't allow them to read them...
Guests can only view the folder titles, nothing else

Give to the people FREE PORN or a porn world. Or a database like the Sharereactor RIP.
Already had a poll for that :-)

As for the link I may do that and charge a small fee per week to help cover forum costs. Does anyone have any rejections?
charging members/visitors/*friends* for ad space or links would only attract spammers and scammers imo, especially if it was a weekly thing. even netweiser managed to con his way into getting a link, and if it's set up like this his link would have been ok if he'd paid

increasing traffic/members, getting rid of the scam ads would help. new people who come with even 'a little' knowledge of things see them for what they are and they must be put off by it, i would be if i didnt already know the place. plus existing members dont want to see them either. it's not what this place is or should be about, and however you look at it, it gives the board a bad reputation

i realise there are costs, but there must be better alternatives like a permanent bride.ru or whatever, i'm sure those would generate more clicks/views than the present one's. there were even things like 'bunny poker' and 'tupperware' in the past - people dont mind clicking these if they know they're helping. i've never clicked any of these new ones and i'd be surprised if any regulars have either

as a mod, we're supposed to stick to the rules and remove any links/posts that are seen as spam. it's becoming a joke and i think we lose all credibility with some members, if someone was to come and post links to what these ad's are for, they'd be put in the trash as soon as they were seen.

yea should look into partypoker or pokerroom.com
they have got some kind of banner support, we need some ligament ads, like for gambling
maybe you could auction off adspace (a banner) weekly/monthly on ebay
I'm sure this site gets plenty of hits

As for the Bride.ru banner. That barely earns me anything, and right now I am worried they are a scam after reading about them on some sites and due to the fact that they have still not honered a withdrawl request after over a week.

I need to recover the costs somehow.

I personally don't see what is wrong with selling a text link or two in the Other Sites section. Its not like tis ruining the forum, and they are so small they shouldn't really bother most people.

I agree, times change and with them their demands; if we want to keep this board going, certain 'sacrifices' will just have to be made.

...The sun goes up for nothing, but (nearly) all the rest costs money, sad but true.

well bride.ru is just one example, other's have been posted in this thread and the other one further down the page

you're worried that bride.ru might be a scam, well the rest definitely are, people do fall for them and thats the reason they exist. having them here is as good as saying we have no problem with it

main point of my post was concerning the banner ad's and not the links. my concern with those isn't that they're obtrusive or distracting, but that they could attract more spam/scams and then it becomes a problem for us knowing which links to remove from posts. some links would be fine, others not and it's knowing where to draw the line, like with netweiser's link - not your fault as you were'nt around back then but it shows how it can happen

the topic question was how to increase traffic, i think if something else could be done about these ad's then it could only help. what newcomer will take the place seriously if we promote scam p2p apps ?

as i type this i'm looking at this -

i think we should sort out the problems we have first before anything else

I don't understand how the banner ads have anything to do with moderating. What do the links in the banner ads have to do with links in posts. The rules never changed.

As for the google ads, I need something there until i can find an alternate source of income to pay part of the server fees. When I say Bride.ru is a scam I meant Not honoring my withdrawl affiliate requests.

Does anyone know of any good affiliate programs that may help.

Pay per click is the best way, as most people here probably don't even have a CC to buy anything with.

As for the google ads, how are they scams? You mean the sites that advertise are scams, or do you just call them that since they charge for filesharing?

apologies for the confusion - my bad grammar i guess, when i said "my concern with those...." i meant the links, not the banners..

yup

i dont personally know of other ways to help with the costs apart from those that have been mentioned, and they seemed to work fine before, without having rip-off ad's

No Problem pol.

Well what worked before for Marc was Bride.ru, but I don't want to rely on them if they won't honor my withdrawl requests.

When you say Scam? How are they scamming? Simply by charging a fee for filesharing? Is that what you consider a sscam, or are they scamming in another way?
