I quite like the guy myself, I've made some easy money removing the worm pcs owned by the computer illiterate.(The kind of people who can't even use MSN or install a program).
omg u evil person [/b][/quote]
People at work know I'm good with computers and so approach me all the time with their computer troubles. It's not just a case of simply removing the worm, I show people how to protect their computer to porotect against further viruses(my boss, for instance didn't have a firewall and in fact knew what a firewall was.)

I think we take for granted our own skills with computers and forget that there are people out their who can't do things we consider very simple to protect their computer, this is how viruses and worms are spread so fast in the first place.

I'm guessing that if I didn't help with their PC's then they would have had to have gone to some sort of computer repair shop who would have really ripped them off.

I'm glad he's been caught. His foolish actions could have ended up killing someone. For example, In England, the lifeboat service's computers were shutdown, and they had to go back to using pen and paper. Luckily they managed OK though.
The computing industry can do without idiots like him.
Were the coastguard effected because they were unprepared though? By all accounts if you have an up to date system with an adequate firewall (both of which you'd expect important computers to have) you will not be trouble by this virus.

You'd also expect them to have steps in place prevent their core system protected from viruses so they can continue operating in the event of such a problem (maybe a separate network not connected to the net or if it is very tight security).

Apparently Microsoft and the FBI tracked him down. His friends and neighbors tipped them off. He had the full source code on his computer and confessed to it all
So not exactly a hard case to crack if His friends ratted on him; 'Microsoft and the FBI' didn't exactly 'track him down'!

I agree, and I always keep my firewall and anti-virus definitions up to date, but it is a shame that people have to do that in the first place.

I think it's a shame that the guy probably didn't realise the possible consequences of his actions. I read in the newspaper today that his neighbours say he is a very lonely person who doesn't get out much and spends a very long time on his computer, and probably didn't know what he was getting himself into.

yeah i guess he did get an error on his own pc and used the report function of XP to report the error to MS
A bit scarry though they caught him this fast

Fact is this was a pretty original guy.. To develop a virus that spreads itself without using e-mail. Think we're gonna see a lot of these kind of stuff in the near future

im glad the dumb fuck got caught (praise his neighbours)......... hope he gets a nice long sentence......... u know how much time it takes keeping my AV up 2 date???

and 4 all the companies that got caught (including the coastguard), pretty dumb....... dont know why the hell they use windows, when they have the time and knowledge (or funds to buy the knowledge) to get linux......... linux saved a lot of companies from major damage (take Philips for example)
great FTP site for awesome quality video clips

I LIKE WINDOWS

the reason linux seems to escape the virus problem is because so few people use it (compared to windows), the norm is windows, loads use it,

so if make a virus you make it to effect the most number of people - ie windows users

BE HONEST LINUX USERS - have you ever had a virus problem?

dude. of course linux users have never had a virus. people who are skilled enough to write virii do not decide to spend months and months writing code to disrupt millions of computers for the hell of it. they do it to try to disrupt the megalomania that is the microsoft corporation. duh.
