It sure beats the 128K up i was getting from DSL. That has been my experience of Cable vs. DSL here in NYC.
Its always nice to hear the opinion of someone in the big city. Where I live, there are multiple cable providers, and at least two dsl providers. Nothing like a little competition to keep things cheap.

I got lucky-a friend gave me his ADSL modem when he moved to another city, but this points up another thing that sucks-the proprietary crap! I'm contemplating a move myself-probably have to buy/rent a new modem!

Oh, I'm in SE UK. It's either ADSL or cable. No SDSL, no HDSL etc.

The max you can get is a 2 Mbps ADSL with a 20:1 contention.

I have Charter Communications Cable, here in MI, the usa.

They have 3 speeds, 256 down, 768 down, or 1.5 down. All with a shitty 128 up...

I get the 768, and its fine for me.

And its month by month payment, no longterm deals, which is nice.

I have yet to see a cable connection under 1.5 Mbps.
Depends on what country you're in...

I'm in the UK and this connection is cable but it's 128kb/s down and 64kb/s up

    NTL - the £14.99 a month deal.

That sounds more like BRI ISDN than cable to me. Man that's slow - you'd get around 16 KB/s downstream + 8 KB/s upstream - better of with 56 K
