One advantage of my great age is that I remember several turning points in American ( and, by definition, world) history.
It is with crystal clarity that the decision on how to write the date comes back to me.
I was but a lad and not qualified to vote in the matter,but I followed the debate with great attention.
As I recall, the primary reason behind arranging the month, day, and year as we do was "to piss off all them nancyboy Euros with their highfalutin ways."
It really was that simple.
Oddly, that simple decision became the cornerstone for our entire foreign policy.
Which seems to be working out as intended.
