But disregarding that, subtitles, like anything else that requires thinking is a matter of practice, had you grown up with it you wouldn't even notice them by now ('cept when they get it wrong), besides, it's more or less proven that natives in nations that use subtitles instead of dubbing, or remakes, have an easier time learning new languages.
No one ever accused hollywood of making an effort to expand peoples' minds though.
Everyone but small kids prefer subtitles, here.

I noticed this recently with the original Spanish version of Vanilla Sky....I like the original better but still hated the subtitles...even though it was barely noticed.

If a film is good then the fact that it is subtitled has no bearing on my enjoyment of it, to me subtitles is the best way of presenting a good film to a foreign audience. Seems to be you're a little closed minded.
