    Try using VLC.
    hxxp://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
It's the best Free media player around, and it plays just about anything.

If your using Nvdia it's your Nvidia ive had this problem before. Go into your Nvidia settings color correction. There should be some overlay option change the gamma and contrast a little. If this way doesn't work just go with Alien5 or Timmy1 options.

hi learncracking, the tv episodes will not usually play
using wmp or a dvd player like powerdvd

like the post before said...google for videolan or visit site suggested
    in his post.
search this forum, you will find answers to your questions.

the description of a rainbow effect usually means you need some
codecs as smallville is usually avi coded in divx, or xvid
the other program mentioned by another member is gspot
it will usually let you know if you need additional codecs.

    K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

it is the small things that usually drive us mad
