as far as friends go...it depends on their disposition. My agenda is always to make them listen to stuff they wouldn't normally...but you have to be gentle!
you can't usually just throw in some Negativland to someone who's used to listening to nothing but Metal or something
But I generally start with Pink Floyd, Neutral Milk Hotel, Aphex Twin, Aesop Rock, Grandaddy, or the Flaming Lips.

Those are usually good, accessible starting places for people to kinda...part from the mainstream
