Most expensive I can think of right now is
frying a cpu.
I can't even remember how anymore but somehow i ended up with 2 athlon xp 2000+'s when I built my first computer and the first one was only running at 1.2ghz (i didnt know i had to up the fsb to 133, it was at 100) so i swapped them wihtout putting new thermal paste and it fried within about 10 seconds.
I then got a replacement 2200+
My next would be a motherboard i fried, which is also how i ended up with the second 2000+.
I didn't know i needed risers between the motherboard and the case/motherboardtray.
When i returned it to the store they were nice enough to give me a new one and let me keep the old fried one.
