I've been using NZBPlayer for quite sometime and agree it's a pretty useful tool.
These days I use mplayer to watch videos inside RAR archives.

I have played rar files in vlc on linux with no dent in the cpu % for ~ 10 years now. This should be mentioned in the first post.
