With really steep hills, uneven ground and whatnot it's sometimes nice being able to pick just the right resistance, though. But generally, 21 gears is more than enough even for that. It's just the novelty of having 27 that's exciting.

I've also noticed that the fitter I get, the less lower gears get used. On my way to work it's mostly the 21st (on my current, much dodgier mtb) all the way. I only shift down by traffic light sometimes, and that's cos it's easier to accelerate if I start lower.

They don't go higher and higher, ratio-wise, either. You just get more nuances.
Nuances of gear change, mad talk. More gears should mean faster speeds.

Ultimately your legs should be going round at about 1 revolution per minute, with the bike going at 250 miles an hour. Anything else is pointless.

I just really like the fancy clicking better gears make.

Not that the way my dodgier bike makes these loud banging noises when I shift doesn't have its charms. I like shifting when I'm really closely behind someone who looks really wobbly.

I've got another bike out on the countryside as well, that one has 24 gears, but I've not tried it yet. It's in pieces. I'm gonna paint it and stuff.

You'd think a bloke with your level of OCD would be going mental about a bike lying about in pieces, all rusting away.

It's not rusting away. I put the frame in a car port, under a bunch of stuff, lyke a barrel, and a trailer and stuff. Just in case someone goes in and tries to steal something.

The gears and that I put in a bag, which I put in a garage at t'parents', and the wheels I hid in another place in the same garage.

    It's safe
