    how does that work then ? dont u do filesharing even if ya use linux and dl stuff the disk gets fragmented or am i wrong on that point ?

    ext2 and ext3 partition types do not need it. They were actually designed so they would not need be defragged. You can leave a linux box running for months and still not have to. As long as you have a few hundred megs of free space you can kiss your defrag days goodbye.

    And yes I do just as much filesharing in linux as you probably do in windows. However, that actually has nothing to do with it.

    I get a lot of fragments on my hard drives, especially the one i use to record tv progs, because i do that a lot.

    Its 120 gig and would take for ever to defragment after a month of use, so i just reformat it instead .

    why didnt M&#036; implement a type of non frag file system

    i wouldent mind swapping a bit of HDD performance
    for non fraggin

    and im sure defraggin wares and tares HDD
    (that head moving back and forth for the duration of the defrag)

    my defrags can last upto 2days
    (thats on my 10gig hdd too)

    mine takes from 3min-30min max. I have 40GB HD. I dunno..You guys probably download 100 progs each day maybe.
