It's a different way for your HDD to interface with the motherboard.
Instead of the 40 pin IDE interface you can use the cute little SATA cable if your HDD is compatable.

i got maxtor diamondmax plus 9 drives. is there a different connector on the back or sumpin?

Take a look on the back of your drive for a small data connector (about one inch long, about 5 mms tall)
