It's not actually that bad, besides for the occasion mugging (which is why I carry now). I live in one of the few portions of the BX which actually has grass.

Unfortulately, in inner NYC, crime is worse than in Australia or the UK. Therefore, the necessity of being armed (be it Mace, a taser, or a firearm) is greater.
