    I cant comment on burning but as far as i can see the rental copies don't have any special encrption, just the same as regular DVDs (CSS and Macrovision)

    These can be bypassed using DVD Ripping programs such as DVD Decryptor and Smart Ripper.

    I have ripped a few rented DVDs to my HD and they seem to play fine from the HD in WinDVD

    Its only certain software that doesnt allow for the burning of movies. Not hardware.

    Software program I use is DVDShrink. Its free and works great. Shrinks down region9 to 5 w/o alot of quality loss.
