When I see a trailer in .mov format the quality is usually DVD-like and the files are the same size as avi's and the avi's have a slightly lower quality, so why have have that bit extra?

Probably because it's proprietary format...
I'm not so sure about avi has lower quality...
.mov files won't play on stand-alone DVD players.
If you try converting from .mov format to .avi format there's an additional loss in quality during the conversion which doesn't occur if you convert from the original source, but of course people who don't have the original don't have that option.

The difference should be huge.. i hope ppl will code with that codec... it seems to be over divx , xdiv and all the codecs we have known.

A well made xvid (mpeg-4) formatted video has DVD-like quality. Along with vbr lame mp3 audio there is very little other formats I find out there that can beat that combo that are free/gpl or even ones that are "commercial" can`t.

Avi indexing is done purely on the video stream, and consequently it assumes that the audio stream is synchronised. But most (all?) avi combiners assume that the audio stream is at least a(average)br, and consequently treat it as cbr. With abr the result is some loss of audio sync. If vbr is used audio sync is often totally out of the window.
Considering that the difference between vbr, abr and cbr for 1hr of video is usually well under 10MB (assuming reasonable bitrates) there seems little point in suffering loss of audio sync for the compartively minor drop in video bitrate required to achieve the same file size.
