for torrent sites the private trackers require you to maintain a ratio but the speeds are good ~5mbit usely and the pretimes are really good usually not more than a few hours
so i was just wondering if it was possible getting a similar service with usenet?

k well then why the fuck are you people using, if your willing to pay cash just get on a 0day ftp or something
because paying 7,50 for a legal service is something different than paying for paysite acces. (dont tell me you didnt mean paysites because self earned acces is allmost impossible to get)

Possible but inconvenient, as in having to cob together multiple free news servers and then manage simultaneous connections to them.

Depends on your definition of quality. My ISP provides newsgroups that, for text purposes, are of very high quality. Good luck getting binaries with them, though.
It's worth it to dish out the money to get an account on a good news server.

My ISP (NTL) has newsgroups and I can get some binaries but it is very limited. The speeds are good though, I easily max out my 10M connection.
@satansraiser: is that Helena Bonham Carter in your sig?

I use my ISP's newsgroup and it's awesome. I get everything I want. Retention is like 25 days, though. So I just keep up with what's out and get it in the beginning.

Trying using NZBs - they're basically a XML file for the newsreader that tell it where to find specific files. NZBsrus.com is probably the easiest to use. Download the NZB and open it with your reader - not all readers support NZB, but most do.

Grabit is a nice free newsreader and has NZB functions aswell.

I don't think there are any free usenet services that are as robust as the pay services, but then again you may luck out and have an isp that has a decent service that you don't have to pay extra for.

hey noob fred861 :P
for me, yes, YottaNews, maximum speed is 16kB/s retention is about 90 days, sign-up 4 free, it's a quality UseNet for Dial-up and ISDN :D.
It's good enough to download eBooks, text...but not good to download DVDs

my isp actually gives me free giganews access, although the speeds are capped at about 70kBps over 3 connections.

Yes, if you want to spend a lot of time learning how to do it.

my isp, btyahoo (UK), gives me free usenet access (provided by giganews!!) and they have recently uncapped the download rate.

lol i thought when it said 4 connections maximum it was a limit that was impossible to pass
put my connections on 32 and got a decent 1MB/s out of my ip's usenet but turns out they ban you for 24h if you use more than 4 connections
yeah i just recently discovered the NZB files. so i guess free leech 2mbit is not bad at all thanks all
