Not really, fragmented files usually just slow down the HD because they get all over the drive and it takes the PC longer to find. And since kazaa downloads cause high levels of fragmentation quite fast, it would be useful to have a dedicated drive. This would just be used for incomplete downloads, as the completed files would then be transfered to the other unfragmented drive or partition.

I agree, I have 69 gigs with about half of it shared at a time. I think sharing too much just slows down how quickly people can get files finished from me.
For instance all the Red Dwarfs- if I shared all my files people would have a harder time getting RD from me cause others would be jumping in to take something else.
I try to rotate them every couple of weeks- keeping RD available at all times. :)

I for one vote that all file sharing be suspended for 1 week except for Red Dwarf Files. This would eliminate network congestion and allow all RD fans to DL from TD while they are still available. Let's say---1st week of december this year. I NEED those files. :) :) :)

I'm sharing 10GB. I could share a lot more (2x120GB HDs on my server), but as my upload slots are always full anyway I only share abot 10 GB at a time, mostly rarer stuff. I don't see why it should be useful to share stuff that's available everywhere, because that would prohibit the rarer files being spread etc.

I agree with some of you, it's not the size that matters. I prefer people sharing 1GB of great, sorted, clearly labelled semi-rare stuff to someone sharing an abundance of misc mp3/small vids crap. I don't check any uploaders below PL 100, but when I'm bored and see someone having a semi-high PL and shareing only crap files I block their IP or sometimes depending on their country/connection after an ARIN/RIPE query their whole IP branch. But only when I'm bored, I know it's in vain and I got better things to do otherwise ;)

Currently I share about 40 Gb on a 60 Gb HD. That's about 5300 Mp3s, 10 or so full length feature films, about 20 shorts and TV eps and...ah...two :( game exes.

But it's all a question of available resources. When I get around to adding that second 120 Gb HD I'll load up all the movies and game exes I have archived.

And you know what? When what you have is really what you use, then that is enough. There will always be someone out there who wants the biggest and baddest collection, just to have the biggest and baddest collection, whether they really want all that stuff or not.

I remember being in total awe of a 30 Gb shared folder when I first started Napstering and was living dangerously by using 3Gb on my 9 Gb Presario...now at Direct Connect I see 200 & 300 Gb collections and there's no reason to believe that when these new 500 Gb + drives hit the market that we won't see some damn fool sharing a terabyte or so...

Yea DC is unfair. Even when I'm sharing all my movie, game and songs (which is about 6 gigs) I rarely meet the requirements of the hubs. Not only are there high share rates you generally need to have an ultra fast connection (usually only people who are using uni / work networks and stuff). DC is definitely an elitist sharing program.

LOL, you don't have many movies or apps if you only have 6GB of shared data. 5-10 movies equals 3.5-7GB. Add a bunch of apps/games and you get a couple more GBs of stuff. Now it shouldn't be hard to get in the 10-20GB hubs.

And you don't need an ultra fast connection either. Most foreign hubs I download from are really slow (up to 50kB/s), which is why I choose [BBB] hubs instead...

If other share rates compare, something like 66% to 75% of most other user's HDs are devoted to shared files...if that algorithm holds true the you must have a hard drive equalling about...ah...3 Mb max? Could I possibly send you a few 3.25 floppies so you can double your HD capabability?
