Not gonna drool. Just a few comments, i would build this one a bit different. i don't get it why buy a dvd and a cdwriter. The 1st does both jobs, i woulda bought a dvd player to accompany the writer. Why bought pretty expensive scsi disks while you coulda done that same configuration using raid-ide, or why not bought your writers in scsi? What kinda scsi card do you have? i should never bought the sb creative 2 card cause this card dissalowes you to make exact digital copies of copyrighted CD´s. (For the rest it´s the best digital soundcard i´ve ever heard).
Ah, i´m just teasing you, nice machine man. Btw you need your modem cause your satelite dish has probably no ul only dl. That is where the 56k comes in, just my gues.

only thing i regret about the sys is video editing but since i got 4 more just like it i just move them off to the other comps and do them there its not that im cheep thugh i did get a great deal on the comps when i bought them all at the same time i just dont feel the need to upgrade yet it works for me
of these 5 comps
1 is in my brothers room for him
1 is in living room (the one with 4 60GB hds) hocked to my tv for movies and to run my direct tv that one has a rainbow extietion card with the video card
the other 3 are stacked up on my desk hooked up to a KMV (keyboard ,mouse, video)controler so i can just turn a switch to use them all at the same time all 5 are hocked up to a 100 base t hub and a 10base t adsl router for inet and another 128 isdn router for a vpn connection to work and so i can take trobble shooting calls when im home

I'd say the Motherboard / CPU combination. I too have a Pentium III based system - and new PIII's are so expensive that really it would be better all round to take the step up - either to AMD Athlon's or to a P4.
Only issue with that is you might need new RAM too, but everthing else should be sweet!
My system (despite not being particularly worthy of the competition  :
- Celeron 1.0GHz (yeah, I know...)
- Abit BX-133 RAID (highpoint hpt-370)
- 512MB Crucial PC-133
- MSI GeForce 4 MX-440 (64MB)
- Seagate 40gig
- 16x DVD-116, 20x Richoh CD-R/RW
- Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
- Pinnacle PCTV Rave
- Diamond SupraExpress 56K Modem
(this isn't the same system I use to access Kazaa, but 2 lists would be silly)

30gig Qantum fireball (I know, I KNOW!)
CD Drive, Sony 52x
LG CD R-W (4x4x32 out of my old PC)
56Kbps modem, it costs about 150 AU$/month for 2 way cable, before installation costs.
And to south-paw, STREET FIGHTER FOREVER!!! Hehe, Sagat isn't my personal choice though, probably more Ken, Dhalsim or Chung-Li.

Not a dumb question, I really could not tell you, but formatting does take a bit of space up. I know the HD that came with my system only ever had 111 gb's of usable space (even after I reformatted). My new one is 114 gb's of usable space after formatting without any OS. I do not think I could squeeze anymore room out of them, if someone has an answer or a way of reclaiming some of that space please reply.

ok its like this
I bought this hard drive that was supposed to be 60 gigabytes; "why does windows say there are only 55.8 GB?" Duh -- the HD manufacturer uses units of 1,000 for their KB/MB/GB, Windows uses 1,024. Take the supposed number of bytes your hard drive has (say, 60 billion) and divide by 1,024^3 (that's two to the tenth cubed). This will yield the actual size in gigabytes.

Bah, u shoulda got the vid card instead of the more ram. That 512ddr is great for most everything, i know, i pull 3dmarks of 12,000 with just 512. And ur vid card however, is super important, and the one u got is shite!
So get urself a new card asap
I read in a PC magazine somewhere, that anything above 512MB doesn't even speed up your PC anymore.
To the contrary, the results they printed showed a slight DECREASE of performance.

03-04-2003, 08:02 AM
ron i would say anything above 768 is overdoing it, i could see where you could use that much ram especially if you have a few programs like photoshop or some type of cad programs running continuously.
but i read the same thing that having to much ram can actually decrease performance. and these guys you see that have like 1 to 1.5 gigs of ram are just wasting their money.
ive got 512 mb of crucial pc2100 ddr ram and i RARELY get below 150 megs available.

dont wory about it soul the only thing u realy need is maybe some more ram u got too rember that with a 800 mhz u will need a 1.4 ghz before it is twice as fast and thats only the cpu the system speed will be a lot less as there is a bottle neck to every thing else u would be better off to upgrade a 5200rpm hd to a 7200rpm hd then dubbleing the speed of ur cpu the only thing ud need thouse fast cpus for would be video editing or for a server with a large database on it.
i have seen peps post that if u got a good video card that u need a supper fast cpu to use it or get all u can out of it and this just isnt true the whole point of a 3d accelerated video card is to take the load off the cpu so if u do 3d gaming ud be better off to get a good video card them uping the cpu
800 Mhz is plenty for any gaming or normal computing that u do the only thing id sugest is more ram 256 would do a lot for ur sys(128 too 256 is a large jump in performance) more then 512 is is not gona help much and u dont need it any way
i got 256 but i use Win98se and it only has to keep 10MB(may be 15MB cant rember) min in memory too work the rest can be in the swap file
if i had winXp id probly go to 512 as Xp has to have 50 MB Min in memory at all times (a lot more if ur useing all the grafix feachures\bloatware)

heh doesnt matter ... itz my mothers com that has the internet but im gonna make my own computer soon :P ... i have to buy teh parts when i have no school so i can wait for its arrival
hey i just got this during the winter break:
P4 1.7 ghz
60GB maxtor hd
256 DDR RAM (may want to upgrade to 512)
64 MB Radeon 7000 video
SoundBlaster 5.1 oem
DVD-ROM 16x (i dunno, maybe samsung)
CD-RW 40x16x48x
MSI 6533 motherboard
ADSL 1mbps high speed
IBM 17" G70 monitor (old)
Logitech Z-340 3 piece speakers (small and cheap but sweet)
some optical thing
and to think b4 i had a p1 120mhz with 1GB hd and 24 mb of RAM (thats right, 24!) and 56k modem (13 or 15 inch monitor, im not sure.) and the fan barely worked!
is my setup considered good for this time period, even though its not top of the line?
i dont think ill ever upgrade nething without gettin a whole new comp. ('cept for the RAM maybe).
i dont play too many games either (not obsessed).
whadya think??

Yeap, I built mine myself too. Only because I got the CPU cheap and thought it would just pop into my old PC, ended up buying everything else except a hard drive, floppy & CD Writer to get a new PC!!
Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz
544MB Ram (Don't ask!)
1 x 20 Gig & 1 x 4 Gig HDD
Floppy donkey
CD Writer
MX440 64MB Graphics card
Internal 56K modem
Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB Broadband modem
A Nice black case with clear side panel and neon lights inside
Packardbell 14" monitor (from my "old" PC) 2 years and it's out of date, huh!
Creative labs 2.1 speakers, sound very good indeed!
Wireless keyboard and mouse, although the mouse is broken because I smacked it on my head in a temper, does anyone else do that?
That's all folks, well, there's more but I need a poo so I gotta go :beerchug: :rtfm:
