I was wondering, if any of you hardware guru's could tell me if there is a major difference between the ati radeon 8500 and 9000 models. I'm trying to decide which to buy from my friend.

Thanks

Check out google for the reviews IC you will get many comparisons there from genuine users.

I used to be quite up to date with these graphics technologies, but haven't read anything about it for a year or two. I still have Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400.

But you could read the features of both cards at ATI site:
Radeon 8500 (http://mirror.ati.com/products/pc/radeon8500le/index.html)
Radeon 9000 Pro (http://mirror.ati.com/products/pc/radeon9000pro/index.html)

As far as I can understand, the 8500 has 2-pipeline architecture, where the 9000 has Quad-pipe architecture.
I can't really tell you what that means, I would have to read some more about it, but I guess it's quite a difference between both of them.

Of course you know that the 9000 is better. It's just the price. Is it as much better as it costs more?

That's something you'll have to figure out.

You could check some online tests first.

My advice:
If money is no object go with the 9000, otherwise read more about it.

The best things are free, but quality isn't cheap.
