After installing k-lite I can no longer run defrag. Defrag starts but it sounds like my computer will collapse and no matter how long I try it can't even defrag 1%.
help me if you can i'm feeling down

Are you closing Kazaa Lite (and any other program you can) before you try to defrag???
Nothing can be writing to your computer when defrag is running, so close as much as you can before you run it..

I use Ctrl-Alt-Del for that and close everything that way, except Windows Explorer (you need that one).
Also switch off your screensaver.

I always boot to safe mode before I run scandisk or defrag

Good advice :)
Also, if you're on w98 get hold of a copy of the Windows ME defragger, it works just as well, and 10 TIMES as fast!
You might also want to think about defragging the swapfile for better performance..
The one file Defrag does not defragment is the swap file (Win386.swp), but this is the one file of all which, when fragmented, will most hamper system peformance. Here's the method I discovered on my own for defragging it along with the entire C: drive -- 1. Shut down Windows to DOS Mode. 2. At the C:WINDOWS prompt, type ERASE WIN386.SWP. 3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot, then hold down the Ctrl key while the sytem restarts. 4. At the special boot-options screen, select Safe Mode. Windows will not re-create the swap file when it reboots via this method. 5. Run Defrag. Push the View Details button and note the absence of that big wad of 'unmovable' files near the end of the drive -- this means the swap file is not there. 6. After Defrag finishes, restart the computer in the normal fashion. Windows will re-create the swap file, but will only be able to do so at the beginning of blank space on the drive, which means that it will be written into a virtually contiguous block. 7. The swap file, as well as the rest of the drive, is now degragmented.

You could also try Diskkeeper. It is a trial version, but does a really good job. http://www.execsoft.com/downloads/menu.asp If you dl a lot and uninstall programs and delete a lot, use it once a week and it is super fast. I am even considering buying it if I don't find a crack

I have the upgrade version of ME on disk, but use 98SE for obvious reasons. How would I go about finding and installing the ME defrag, I do remember from when I did have it installed, it was much quicker
