is there a way to get better speeds on a download... im downloading at 50kb/s per peice and i want to know if i can go faster

Right click on the news server and increase the # of connections. As many as your NG provider allows.
If that doesn't help you might wanna try another port (check you NG providers FAQ or something).
You can also go for SSL if your ISP is throttling the other ports.
