View Full Version : Mpg To Avi
I have a 758Mb movie that I would like to burn on a regular CD.
It's an mpg file now, so I was thinking that if I converted it to avi, it might be smaller.
Is this possible, and if so, how?
Thank you for your time. :D

Get VirtualDub :D http://www.virtualdub.org/
Then you can open your MPG in VirtualDub and resave it in AVI format. You can also do filtering and setting a lot of other option during this process. VirtualDub is a really great application and it is free! You can get detailed information on how to use VirtualDub, FAQ's etc. at the VirtualDub homepage.

Here is a little info for you. http://home.earthlink.net/~codeczone/cnv_asftompg.htm
But I'm pretty sure now it can be done fairly easily with virtualdub. Check out vcdhelp.com under the edit section for more info on conversions.
edit: i posted that too slowly and someone beat me to the punch

The mpg was more than likely created to be burned as a VCD. Because a VCD uses different error correction than a DATA cd as in the case of an avi, it will hold the entire 758mb movie.
A blank CD has roughly a 700mb capacity with an ISO structure but in reality there's 100mb or so reserved for error correction beyond the 700mb.
A VCD doesn't require the extra 100mb error correction so it can be used by the file. Giving a total capacity of over 800mb.

I used Virtual Dub to convert a mpeg file to avi file. When I save it to avi file the program crashes
Has anyone had same problem?

Yep. VirtualDub always crashes on me, no matter what I'm doing with it. :(

So actually, I might not have to convert to avi then?
