View Full Version : Frozen Frames In Movies

Ok. Here's one for really technically smart people. What is your way of getting rid of frozen frames in movies? I've been diging for the right tool and so far none have produced satistfactory results.
DivX AntiFreeze 0.4 (http://www.tac.ee/~prr/videoutils/) is a DivX support program that avoids freezings that occur during playback.
It supposedly works with 3.11 DivX codec (and some MPEG) but all my test movies with frozen frames are apparently diferent encodings. Doesn't work for me
AviDeFreezer (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/avidefreezer.zip) is a tool for fixing frozen frames.
Well, all I can say it that I tried really hard but could not get it to work for me. A Win XP issue?
I've tried a couple more, but can not remember all of them. How do you cope with frozen frames problem?

Good question, I hope somebody answers it that knows what they're doing.

You could also check this program out:
TFO's Codec Finder ver 2.0 : http://oa.thenoobies.com
It searches the file and your PC to see if you have the right codecs installed and tells you which ones the movie needs. Works most of the time. This will help you in finding the correct ones. A lot of times, freezed frames are due to incompatible codecs.
I'm sure there is a hash here for that program too - try a search in the verifieds.

Yes. You're right. But I can build on example of corrupt frame in LOTR: Two Towers - it's sometime after 7 minutes 45 seconds - frame number (11259). Probably not everybody that is talking about that error which causes 'freezin' has bad codecs... ;) Good point thougt. Can you elaborate that 'incompatible codec' theory. When do I know codec is not compatible enough? Run Codec finder? I use The Faimous One Codec Finder regularly, althought sometimes it says codec not instaled, but movie plays just fine. <_<
The freezing I am trying to solve is due to corrupt frame that causes movie to flicker a specific picture but the sound (and movie counter) goes on as usualy. Iz happened to me with some downloads. And download again is not a very practical advice - is it?

hmmm, lemme guess....u guys all used avi preview yeh? and the corrupt frame is the same frame the preview ended on wen u previewed it?
cos it was for me too.....best thign i can say if u dun wanan download it again, is to use virtual dub and snip around the corrupt frame (and afew more around it just incase) then join the 2 segments back up.
lemme know how u all end up sorting it out anyway yeh?
hope it helped anyway guys n gals (=^_^=)

Using Virtual dub (http://www.virtualdub.org/download) is a good tip. And here's how cutting should be done.
Step one: Find a bad frame. (If you plan to have a movie evening with delicate guests, you shold first play avi in virtual dub to see if there are any major problems). Play avi file using Play Input (play sign at the bottom with small I). Virtual dub will stop with error message on corrupted frame. Mark this frame as Selection start (Home key or Edit --> Set selection start)
Step two: Find next key frame. (Key frames are those frames that are not compressed without background picture information). Edit --> Next keyframe. Mark this frame as Selection End. Edit --> Set selection end.
Step three: Same movie without corrupted frame. File --> Save as AVI. Be sure to select Video --> Direct stream copy first.
But the saga continues... The above procedure actually cuts out a part of the movie. Although that is a minor problem because you will hardly notice it, but (for purely academic purposes) are there any suggestions how to do it without losing part (even that small) of the movie?

i have had a few instances when i use the avi preview ..the data near that same point just happens to be corrupted
i persoanally dont mind a bit of flicker and what not, my problem is if was to try and stream this movie to say mpeg1 i experience an error or a program crash
maybe a piece of advanced software like adobe premiere could fix it, but where would i begin
it seems like i could restream the movie, accept the flicker, and remove the instance of "corrupt data"
but how could i do that without a crash?
any ideas?

Thats a good post Bro.
Heres another link with some good explanations and graphics on how to use Virtual Edit (and NanDub which is my favourite). http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/vdub-filters.htm
The problem with messing about with frames is if you dont do it properly you will get sync problems - i have tried to edit out the bad bits of a frame, but that dont seem to work - the only solution being to edit out the entire frame - bit of a loss, but at least the sound stays in sync.
Personally, as long as i know where the glitch is in the movies, i dont mind, so i can allways roll a ciggy when its time :)
edited: cause i forgot the damn link <_<

Yes (nod nod), I know what you're talking about. My woman (just yesterday) complained about what is the one thing that is bothering her the most. She misses advertisements the most.
