I had this router for a while and it's the only one I've own so I don't know if this is a common thing.
What happens is all of a sudden, and for no reason at all, my router drops its settings and I can't connect again until I reset it...just as if I had just purchased the thing.
I can swap the cable for a direct connection thru the modem, but that only works for the main computer.
It happens about once a month.
Is this just a difective product or a normal thing with routers??

Hard to say, I had a lynksis router I was running until about a month ago. BEFSR41 ver. 2 was the model, and I had to apply a firmware upgrade to it a little while back. You can get it from their site if you have the same one. Solved many problems for me. Did you look in their troubleshooting/ frequently asked question sections?

Thanks for the advice. I fetched the installation CD and after get it going upgraded the firmware. I have no idea if it's gonna make a difference, but it can't hurt either.

I think the firmware on the CD is the same old one as in your router?

Go to the manufacturers website and get the latest one.

oh yes thank you. I mumbled everything on the same sentence but what I actually did was to get the CD so I could get the router to work and then I went to the web and updated to the latest firmware available. This is a cheap $40 router linksys nr041. I know they have some for 3 times as much wich technically do the same job. I guess I got what I paid for.

If you call their tech support, they are excellent and very patient. At least that was my experience.

Nah, I hate tech support in general. They are usually very narrow minded and can't help you unless things are exactly as in the book/class they had.

  Hey I resent that comment - I used to BE tech support and we're not all that way!!!!

Good thing we weren't talking about telemarketers, 'cause if I had posted my opinion about them I'd be in trouble now!

I have a Linksys too, 8-Port for Cable/DSL, and it does the same thing, dropping the connection regularly. I can tell you it's not defect, I have exchanged it for a new one and does the same thing.

Are you using Videotron in Quebec, Canada?

Nope, Los Angeles. But it makes me feel better to know that it isn't just my unit. Thanks

Hello,

I also have a Linksys 4 port router, and I am using Videotron in Quebec, I can start Kazza lite, it does connect, I can actually start to DL a file and then poof, I have been disconnected, only a reboot will let me be able to access the net again, If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.

Thanks

One thing I've learned here. Always try upgrading to the latest firmware.

However, an *important note* is that you need to upgrade your router to the latest firmware/driver. For instance, if you have a LinkSys router, go to www.linksys.com to download and install the latest driver for your device. Please make sure you restart your router (cycle the power on it) and restart your computer after installing the updates.

That's from one of those help sites I found.

The firmware has been updated, everything works fine, hell even winmx works like a charm on my daughters computer, just KL seems to hate me.

As long as you arent wanting a wireless go with a Siemens 4 port DSL\Cable router its good and very reliable. You can find them for $8 bucks at office depot and they are good and fast and reliable.

Office Depot has the Siemens SpeedStream 4-Port Cable/DSL Router with VPN support for a cheap $28.76 - $20 rebate = $8.76. Search for 616096 Rebate Exp 1/31

If you're using the default ip address for your LAN network (192.168.*.*), you could be DDoS attacked while on Kazaa by others doing the same.

It works best to use odd LAN addresses AND port-forward 1214 to the computer Kazaa is on.

I've never had to do that with my Linksys router, I actually never had to do a thing to mine for Kazaa...

Ok so if I am using 192.168.1.2 (Which I am) and I have my port forwareded to my machine it's no good, but if I change my ip to 192.168.1.3 ( a Odd ip addy) then everyting should work?

Is DMZ enabled on your router maybe? I think it proabably should be even though I have had no problems with my Siemens router without DMZ enabled.

wwdragon
01-27-2003, 06:48 PM
Nope, I never enabled DMZ, no matter what game I play port forwarding always worked, the reason I don't like DMZ is that fome some reason when I use it and install Zone Alarm (the only one I really trust) something weird happens and after a few days no other boxes on my network can connect to me yet I can connect to them fine. I have narrowed this weird problem to Zone Alarm, once uninstalled all machines can see and access mine.

P.S. I don't mind changing my IP for a odd number if that will do the trick

this post really isnt about the Linksys router droping a connection but its about the router.........ok we have two computers networked in the house on a cable connection, one connected from the router to the computer using actual cable line, the other is using a wireless connection to connect itself to the router (Linksys Wireless PCI Card ver 1.05) My question is that the computer that has the modem right next to it, and is connected to the router using actual cable only gets a max bandwith of about 78 when i search, but the one using the wireless can get up in the 1,000's to somtimes even 10,000. why would there be that big of a difference in bandwith if they are both connected through the router? is there somthing i can change so that the bandwith on the one thats directly connected to the router is as high as the one thats not??

thanks

When I said "odd" ip, I didn't mean the last number should be odd -- I meant change the WHOLE IP so it's not in the 192.168.*.* address space.

10.*.*.* isn't as bad as 192.168.*.* is.

I'm using something in the 172.*.*.* range.
I basically never see ips in that range with Kazaa.

For those on routers, pop up a dos prompt/command prompt and type this in:
NETSTAT -N
The sheer volume of numbers in the 192.168.*.* range can be staggering -- but if your LAN isn't using that IP range, they get blocked by the router. As far as I know, we can't connect with them anyway. :(
