I am having major problems with my PC. Everything seems to work fine, but it crashes a lot! This happens especially when I do anything major (eg burn CDs, watch films...). There dosn't seem to be a link between the crashes and it's bugging the hell out of me! I've run all sorts of diagnostics, and nothing seems to be wrong.

There is 1 problem that I keep having, however: To watch films through my TV, I first have to change the screen size (from 1024x768 to 800x600). When I hit apply I get "The Blue Screen"!! with the error
"A fatel exeption OE has occured at 0028:c0036628 in VxD IFSMGR (01) + 00002C64"
When I press a key I get another error message, but instead of OE I get OD and 0246:015747FB. Then I press a key again and get OD again with OACF:0157268B.

What the hell is going on??

My PC is a 900Hz AMD Duron, 448Mb ram, Win98

sounds like hardware problems.

make sure you have the latest drivers and any new bios updates for your video card.

and welcome to the wonderful world of windows where every day is blue.

definatley update alll your drivers, try a diff virus scan.
if all else fails, reformat
you shouldnt be having those probs, windoze or not.

One thing I'd check is ram. A defective or wrong type of ram installed may be the problem if it happens when you're performing power hugging operations.

Thanks guys. I have all the latest drivers, and until a week or 2 ago, never had any problems. I did however install a new CD burner, and had to take out my fan (which I then put back) and since then the crashes! I've even reformatted!!

have you remembered to put the power in for the fan. i have forgoten to do this on a few occasions and it crashes your pc when cpu hungry processes are run.

get a big stick, hammer or gun. then take out your vengance on your box. will not help with the problem but it will sure make you feel better.

ok now do you have any spare pieces of pc laying around. ( before you attack your box)
if so have a bit of a swap round.
try swapping to your old video card or sound card.
see if this makes the system more stable.

the point of this excercise to is to try to identify which piece of hardware is not working properly. so only exchange one piece at a time then test your system.

see if you can identify which component is buggered. then you should replace it.
