10Mbit/s ethernet. It's not T1, and it's not T3, so what should I choose?

I've got a 1.5Mbit cable connection, I'm the only one on the cable line too.
I have edited the poll so it is a bit easier to answer.

Maybe you should've used 8Mbit instead of 1MB since it may confuse some people.

Made it explicitly say bytes (big B) now so it is not confused with bits (small B).

I'ma be a geek and tell you that you should change all the connections to small b's in the and make it bits rather then Bytes because Bytes is the speed you download at and your connection is in bits. You take your connection which is in bites and divide it by 8 which gives you an approximate measurement of your download. :D See what happens when I'm bored. Don't take this as me tryin to be a smart ass please. :)
:: seanism | dot | com :: (http://www.seanism.com)
Actually, serial transmision consists of a start bit, a number of data bits (usually 8) and a stop bit, so that's 10 bits per byte.
Except of course when you start with packetised transmission protocols where your modem throws away the start and stop bits and groups the data bits into packets of 64 or 128 bits, then adds start and stop bits back on and a cyclic redundancy checksum. You still get 9 or 10 bits per byte, but now you've got error correction.
Then take into account compression algorithm's and you can sometimes compress those packets quite considerably, so you may only be using (on average) 4 bits per byte.
So while your connection speed is a measure of how many bits you can physically receive/transmit, it doesn't often relate to your actual data download speed.
And if you are tired, GET SOME SLEEP :D

Averaging about 4k/sec on my dailup modem :( . The cost of living out in the mountains. Even worse, lightning is really really bad around here, in the past year I've lost 4 surge supressors (the phone line protection part of them) and 3 modems (U.S. Robits modems I might ad). No cable avail, no paper delivery avail, it's like pulling teeth to get UPS to deliver.
But when I used to live in a big city I got 200k/sec with a cable modem.
Maybe I will be able to afford satalite modem one day.

usually i only get about 3k/s quite annoying. but that's often cuz I have a lot of IE windows up.
And can someone tell me why in my old computer with a 33.6 k modem, ie pages would actually load quicker. The puta I have now is an absolute BEAST!!! I guess it could be a crappier modem in my new computer that is the trouble.

man everyone has these sweet connections, i live in australia and broadband here is so fucked up,
you can get cable with limits and if you go over you have to pay or like me get capped to 28.8k modem speeds, which in practice is around 4kb/s i pay AU$80 or around US$47 a month and at the time of signup the plan had netstats which allowed you to download around a cd a day. the speed is good but since the introduction of caps i have lost faith in my provider, optus. i can get anything upto 1mb per second and 16kb/s capped upload, but then this drops to shitty speeds after only 3gig of download, this monthe i did that in a day... fuck the telcos, i am considering downgrading my conection to 512/256kbit adsl. so anyway enough blabber, all you american/canadian/european people, consider yourself lucky. <_<
Here is a screenshot of some sweet speeds on my cable conection, before it went gay (http://members.optusnet.com.au/touki/images/bandwidth.gif)

I wish there were a system in my area that was more dedicated but as it is, at least I am not one of the poor Dial up folks out there. In my area of the world Dial up really blows.

Do you mean how fast SHOULD we be able to download or how fast does kazaa let us download? I'm on cable and very rarely get a good download speed going. Most go at 2.0 or 1.0
When I get one going over 100.0 I wish I could teleport through the lines and hug them.

I've got 1 Mb/sec conenction from blueyonder (telewest) - UK but the uplaod and download speeds I get change every hour so i cant really get a average and the guy who asked if pete was a ucky bastard lol it really depends if you have cable , the cablign around your area because UK have shit cablign (BT are putting loads more in soon) and the only way to get T1 and T3 conenctions in uK is for an office or if you were fuckign rich get it instaleld in your hosue but its ahrd to find a company that will. and it costs a bomb

I think, I have the crappiest ADSL connection:
256 kilobits down (31,5 KB/sec max)
64 kilobits up (7,5 KB/sec max)
:(
And for this I pay appr. 36$ per month in my country, isn't it a rip-off?

I use a cable connection which I get 1500/128. Most times I get more, depending on the time of the day, how my isp's node's are, etc. I also don't notice that much of a speed difference when I run kazaa lite in the background, but I do notice some system resource things, like when I open another program it would take a few seconds, and my pc is new..I mean with 256 MB SDRAM, 40GIG Hard Drive running on a 1.40 GHz Processor, I see no reason why it should run "slow"

256kb/s broadband but most of the time d/l at the speed of 7kb/s
What a waste
I get consistant 1.5MB/s with cable. EVERYONE SHOULD GET CABLE!!!!!!!!!
(you know, I can download a 5MB file in 27 sec., where you 56K guys takes at least 12 mins.!)
I know it is probably capped but hardly anyone in my area has it. I can't complain, I pay $25/month (Comcast) and even the small towns here in southern Alabama have it.
My PC is very slow when Kazaa is up as well, but it is all resources, I never come close to peaking my connection throughput. When running other programs it likes to crash. Kazaa still has many a bug!

PS and thats what I started out with.....my friend has almost the same plan and he calls up his isp (diff from mine) and tells them to up the speed, now he's getting around 1.3mbits/s!!!! (not bytes, bits lol)
anyways, i prefer DSL over Cable any day....i get pretty much the same speed, maybe a tiny bit less, but its not on a shared Cable line!!!!!
and my isp can't call me and tell me to stop hogging the upload bandwidth either, cause I don't have to share with anyone on ADSL.....hehehehe :P

Like the Ninja above me, I have Adelphia Powerlink too. I don't know how fast I'm running or any other stats. What I do know is that no matter how much they gouge me for this connection, I'll pay it. I will never use a dial-up again. If I ever try anything faster than this cable modum I'll probably get spoiled on that too. I'm in a college town and they have ethernet connections everywhere but I haven't tried it yet.

Maybe you should've used 8Mbit instead of 1MB since it may confuse some people.
Made it explicitly say bytes (big B) now so it is not confused with bits (small B). [/b][/quote]
T 1/2,says connected at 100.0 mbps(500k max)(upstream speed 128k).$39.95 which is what i use.or full T-1(1000k/1mb max)(upload speed 200k) for $49.95.

Thats rediculous :))
the majority of the voters are d/l with "1 MByte/s or faster" :)) LMFAO I dont think thats quite realistic. Do u guys with the "1 MByte/s or faster" know what a 1MByte/sec is ??? Well, lets not underestimate ur good conns but I personally think that some ppl are not really aware how fast are they running and are confused. i gor 500kB/sec d/l. And for this poll i expected that the most users would have smth like 250kB/sec :)
But NO!! i am wrong -- so many ppl (themajority) got a bad ass connn.
Again, I think some folks are kinda confused thats all.

 I have cable, but if you add up ALL of my d/ls (about 30 to 50) then I max out somewhere between 50 and 100 kb/s. Usually it's less than that... about 20 kb/s. That means I get less than 1 kb per second for each d/l. Another thing is that I can only d/l from one source at a time now. I remember when I first got kazaa and I could d/l at 60 kb/s from 8 different sources for one d/l.... Does anyone else feel Kazaa is slower than when they first got kazaa? I think that should be the new poll!!

If you have a cable modem ...they dont stay the same speed all the time....they change speeds depending on the time of day and how many people in your area have your ISP and are online.
Every connection is shared regardless of what anyone says, only difference is DSL is shared at the CO (Central Office) instead of the gateway to the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System). Phone providers need many more resources (larger data capacity) at their CO's than do cable companies at their gateways... If the phone companies have low bandwidth at the CO's, then the DSLAM will probably short circuit or similar.
As for cable modems not staying the same speed, from what I have seen from my Cox connection, I have an average of 372 kb/s even during peak hours.

You gotta love connections with big companies I have four T3 connections running to me one for each of my systems I know I dont need so much but hey if they offer it and its free and its grey-area you take it. Its sweet downloads are instant and there is virtually no lag in any games! gotta love fiber-optics.

My hookup? It's usually about 200kb/s, though I've seen it go up to 500kb/s from time to time.

I get fantastic d/l speeds, just got done pulling off 6 episodes of FLCL totalling about 600-650 Kb/S all together. What totally sucks is that with MediaCOm broadband cable I can only upload at like 4 Kb/S. I really gotta figure out the bottleneck or the guy getting Win98SE from me now is gonna find my house and come over here and just burn a copy, lol. Makes me feel like a real leech especially since most of what I share is large softwares.
I'm just gonna give up on computers and watch football for the next 6 months.
Maybe I should get DSL for uploads and keep the cable modem to d/l ?!?

I read somewhere ntl gave up on the idea of the cap. don't know if it is true.
I've never recieved anything form ntl saying that there is a 1GB per day cap, so I just ignore it.
