Hey all. Currently I am using a dial up connection and i notice that my download speeds are very slow. My average download speed is about 5kb/sec. and it takes about a while night to download half of a movie. I was just wondering is it worth the extra money to purchase dsl internet? What are the average download speeds of just your regular dsl? How long will an average movie take ? Like a 300 000kb movie? Thanks

Download speed will depend on 2 things what kind of DSL you have and who are sharing the files. Because they must have the upload speed. so a 300mb movie can be between a few minutes to .... days. The great advantage is that if you're really have to have a file you let the pc running 24/7 and have no extra costs.

ON cable I average around 20-100kb/s. (Using multiple sources.) I downloaded 150mbs in around 1/2 hour so ur looking at about 60-120minutes on DSL. (average)

I have found the advantages of dsl to be not so much in how fast you can dl one movie. But rather how much you can dl at a time period. As jetje said, it will depend on who you are downloading from at any particular time.
With dsl you can dl several files at once and not worry about cutting into any particular files dl speed. So I am usually dl'ing 3 or 4 movies, a dozen or so sitcoms and other odds and ends. I have my downloads set at 10 at a time and if something isn't available it moves to the next.
I usually get a movie or 2 a day and a few sitcoms unless I am really lucky and get a lot more.
And the 24/7 at no extra cost is great :)

;) Sometimes on DSL i am only downloading at 5kb/sec,it is like the others say,it depends on the other person you are downloading from.DSL cost $40-$50,if you download alot of movies and play games online then it is worth it,but for a normal user stick to dial up.

Oh boy. Oh boyoboyoboy. Someday I hope to move from middle earth to somewhere where these amazing things are available to me. I suppose I am lucky to have dialup, LOL.

That would be 388Kb/s fyi...pretty good.

One GREAT thing about DSL...dont take up the phone line and you are ALWAYS connected.
