Hi 1st post.
OK I had 'my share folder' on external drive 'F". Lots of crashes later... installed the drive internally and it worked great. To get to the point, now 'my share folder' was in 'E' drive.
in command prompt type {subst f: e:}. Then create a folder on 'F' called 'my share folder'.
And like magic all the completed lost movie/dat files will become movies. Subst command will not survive reboot. No extra software needed just good old dos. For the man on dos subst type 'subst /?'
Though I'd post this in the spirit of dos;)
Love your forum.
Do you guys make VCD and SVCD for TV viewing? Or am I the only guy wasting his time with that?

Thanks for the tip...I'm sure plenty of folks make their own vcd/svcd here. I for one am not that patient to wait "X" amount of time, so I don't or rarely do B)

I use an s-video lead and tv tool :)
Incase u dont know:
S-Video= A lead similar to scart like such on the back of a dvd player (an electronics store will know)
But u must have an S-Video 'out' connection on ur PC and either a scart or S-video 'in' connection on ur TV.
Or just ask an electronics store how to get ur pc picture to ur tv :)
TV Tool= A piece of software that sorts out the picture from the above connections and when configured right whilst playing a divx dvd rip can produce a near dvd quality picture on the tv screen.
& this can be found as a verifed sig on this forum.
If u know not wot im talking about read lots of this forum :)
More interestingly wireless pc to tv connections r emerging allowing u to watch ur pc screen on any tv in the house :D

Jimmy,
I've the same problem but I don't understand your explanations.
What do you mean by installing the drive internaly?
What are the exact steps to ge to the command prompt?
Can you explain?
For info: I convert to vcd's too but it takes so long that I'm trying to figure out how to play the avi files on my TV for taping onto a VHS tape.
I think he's saying that he had an external drive (F).
So when he made a new internal drive(E) he mapped drive F to drive E using the subst command.
This was so that he didn't lose any of his partially completed downloads (they just happened to be movies).
It's a neat trick, but it doesn't work with NT, 2K or XP.

The thing is firewire drives are only good for 1 read/write if you use the drive for more than 1 thing at a time the drive crashes my system. So I crack the external firewire case, and inside is a beautiful IBM 7200 deskstar 40gig drive. I took the drive out , opened my pc and installed the dirve as an internal master of EIDE channel 2. Before I did all this, I copied all my *.dat files off the drive. I had to reformat the drive as an internal device. The subst command was used because my d/l's would complete then get 'lost' trying to go to there original folder. Also the susbt command is a handy tool for games, the same why deamontools would be used:)
Sounds like an expensive way to add a hard dirve.
I bet firewire drives don't crash with later software, otherwise they would be useless.
