Please tell me there's a way to ban people who don't share files. Making this an option would certainly encourage others to share (if they were unable to access files from those of us who share everything).

Why worry about it? I share - probably stuff you dont want, but people still download from me. I could care less if theyre sharing. When they download, MY participation level goes up whether they are sharing or not. I never even check if they are sharing. Maybe they have their reasons. I cant believe SO MANY people worry about that.
There is a way. You just need a good firewall like ZoneAlarm Pro and the patience and time to find the IP of every sneepboy that tries to leech from you. Of course if every fair sharer did that on a regular basis there wouldn't be so many leechers around to waste our bandwidth in the first place.

Sorry pal but I dont consider myself a leech. I have had probably a few hundred uploads from me in the last 2 months. I am sharing nearly 500 files at this time. The number keeps growing. Watch where youre slinging your mud.
P.S. Your great way to stop leaches is ineffective if the leechers ip changes everytime they go online.

You'd be surprised!
Some people are really obsessed by this.
However, as you have rightly pointed out, because it's such a flawed system, leechers are ESSENTIAL for the participation level to be effective!
It's so catch-22.

Sneepboy :
If all those that download actually shared, then they'd be more people to download a file from and download times would be faster (most of mine are around 0.something....)
It drives me mad to see 900 hours needed to download a file when people download from me at more than 20/30 Kb. After a couple of days, the same download suddenly goes up to 15 kb and I pray that the + sign beside the file stays on for another 5 hours...I bless the guys that made that + sign come on !
I don't have much space on my disk so I restrict the number of downloaders but my upload rate is high to allow others, with more space to make the file available to others. When enough people have the file, i replace it with another one.
In one word : the more people share, the faster the download.

Well, I am definately speaking ONLY for myself here: Everyone is welcome to download from me. I will not check to see if you are sharing. I might check to see what youve got if you are downloading something from me that makes me think "Hey, if they want that, they might have something I would like". A "supreme being" not sharing just does not bother me like it does some of you folks.

I personally kill all leeches detected by me..... unfortunately running the system nearly 24/7 i'm not there 20 of the 24 hours.... The antileech software kills to many fine people who share, so i can't use it. But hé, every killed leech gives me a sweet feeling, and i always sent them a note (often undeliverable, yes) but hey: I feeeel fine tada da dada i feel good" (james brown) :D B) btw don't need to be a supreme being just like to be me...
Sneepboy, you are the one who confesed he's sharing stuff we don't want. You're very confusing.
In any case you oughtta be concerned about what you're sharing and who's downloading from you. P2P is all about sharing. If someone's not sharing-and I mean sharing usefull stuff- then he simply must be shut out.
As for the effectiveness of my banning method you're right to some extend. But it was just an indicatory suggestion. The changing IP's could be more easily fought by a new feature in kazaa like a right click menu with the IP of the leecher. If everyone could so easily block an IP then leechers would find it a too hard to be worth the effort. Afterall you do have to reconnect to change a dynamic IP and the leecher can't sit by the comp 24h doing that just to finish a download.
Just another suggestion, you know, anything but sitting doing nothing about those who don't play fair. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.

I do share stuff and people download from me everytime I turn on KaZaA. I do not share the latest MP3's or movies which I think alot of you all are only interested in. I do share other stuff. (Some software, games, images, etc.) We are a community. As long as people download from me and my p level goes up, as far as Im concerned, Im playing my part in the P2P community.

I'm with you on this one sneepboy, I really can't be bothered to check on uploaders, it's not worth the time and trouble (except for the reasons you've said).
And if you don't like what I'm sharing - tough, I may not like what you've got.
Lets try to encourage others to share what they've got, but abusing them and cutting them off all the time is not likely to do it.

Yeah you're probably right, 1st i was almost obsessed with it, to kill all leeches. Was one of the reasons i didn't have the pc running 24/7. Now it's far less, being behind the pc i'll check what they're sharing. Sometimes to see if there's something interesting for me. But if i see people starting to download big games or movies without sharing, i normally sent them a message that if they want "these big files" they must share them. Lot of people respond by starting sharing (for that moment, i know). If they don't reply at all....
Lot of people don't know much 'bout KaZaa. For example, they say if they start sharing they see a lot of people upload from them. And think it's affecting their download speed. If you then tell that they can set limit to the max uploaders and upload speed, they're suprised. And say that they start to share in the future.... (i know some are lying, but at least i tried). If they come up with more questions, i give them a link to this board. B)

I think it is sad that people want to control whether or not people should share or not. It really seams that there are worse things happening. I find way more people sharing crappy and downright false files than the real thing. Why worry about people not shairing when many of those that are sharing are lieing about the quality, and names of the files.

Sneepboy, just keep doing what your doing.
Whats 'useless files' to some are wanted by others.
Thats the whole basis of the system. Personaly I havent got any rare files (i think) but I know they're there if i want them...makes me feel good.
