that's most likely the real one and it works fine for me....
it's the one i'm sharing that has everything working, exept you'll need the save game fix most likely also.
it just freezes up i have never saved a game.
here are my comp specs ---
633 mhz intel celeron
256 ram
voodoo 3
win98 se
anything else you need to know just tell me
thanks for replying

how many megs of ram does a vodoo 3 have? i'm assuming it would have more than 16 but if it doesn't this is from the faq of gta3
Video Memory:
Grand Theft Auto III requires a video card with 16 MB of video memory
or greater to run. Grand Theft Auto III will refuse to run if it is
launched on a machine with less than 16 MB video memory.
all i can find that i could think of.
rk
also the sound dosent work

What if its just the WIN98 OS? I had teh same problem when i installed GTA3 (same as yours) onto my other computer but it didn't work, same problem as yours, but installed it onto my current computer (with XP) and it works fine...

make sure you downloaded the savegamefix. Also, the radio stations are left out in this version, but you can download them seperately...
(but the file i have is 133.447 kB, and is called GTA III - [_RiP_] - YOU BETTER SHARE!.exe)
the savegamefix is 1.112kB
the radio stations have names like GAME.WAV, CLASS.WAV, KJAH.WAV ...
edit: checked for the 138 MB version, and it looks kinda fake to me. the same file is also called GTA 3: Vice City and James Bond Nightfire...
I got the save game fix, sound still dosent work and still frezes
but I got all the way to the intersection until it froze

i suggest you try dl'ing the 133.447 kB one, it works guaranteed (if you apply the savegamefix).
and about the sound, do you get no sound @ all?
and what video settings have you set?

Try going into Display Options, and make sure Trails are Off. You could also try lowering other settings, like Resolution and Draw Distance. Your video card might not have enough onboard RAM.

i ahve the [RiP] You Better Share ! one too and it works perfectly on my pc....
of course my pc is powerful.....
3.06 ht
512 rdram
120+20gig
xp pro
aiwpro9700
I have absolutly no sound, but I think that think that is form the crc errors on mythpak.pak and pak2
heres my vid settings:
1280x1024
16bit color
EDIT: ^^^those are my desktop setting^^^
here my gta3 setts
640x480x16
I had the sameone (the real deal no bullshin, 517mb unpacked....etc) the sound worked (no crc errors) but it still froze so I deleted it because I thought it was a fake (didnt know about verifieds yet) Ill try the [RiP] one tho

read the thread! 2 people, including me have said this is the one:
133.447 kB, (called GTA III - [_RiP_] - YOU BETTER SHARE!.exe)
Im downloading it now, it is so fast, last time I looked 81 users had it!
I just got done download the [_RiP_] one and i dont even get as far as i did with the "real deal no bullshin" one
It stops loading a game when its at about a mm left on the loading bar
I can still exit the game, If I do alt+f4, This is making me mad now. Could it be direct X? What version dose gta3 need?
I dont know if this will help much but this is the illegal operation i get

@LSA: what system do u have? is there anything else running? what version of DirectX have u got?
it really works for me, and my computer isn't that good (about 256 Mb Ram, Amd Athlon at 1109 Hz, crappy onboard sis gfx card)
I always have these things running:
IBM Media acess pro (I have a keyboard with customizeable buttons on it that is the thing let makes them work)
DUmeter
Norton
Motorola sm56 pci modem (Some modem properties thing)
633MHz Intel celeron
256mb ram
Voodoo 3 16mb VRAM
win 98se
I have an motherboard based sound board: this could be trouble
Motherboard based sound chips:
We have found certain motherboard based sound chipsets do not report
having a hardware sound buffer, and crash with Grand Theft Auto III. We
found that running Microsoft’s “DXDIAG” and performing the sound tests,
will present the user with an error message saying that a hardware
buffer is not supported, and would you like to use a software buffer.
Selecting a software buffer will allow this sound chipset to work with
Grand Theft Auto III.
^^from the gta3 readme^^
It says it will play with software buffer in dxdiag,
I'll try it again
i put the mythpak.pak things in the dir where I wanted to install the "real deal no bullshitn" and now sound works, takes a little longer for it to freze

the combination of having only a 633mhz, cpu and only a 16 mb chip , will cause slow frame rates in a 3D app, like gta, you need a sys. upgrade for that knid gaming!
1 ghz, cpu and 32mb chip, would be ideal, but you can always go for more!!

It plays fine on my 550mhz PIII, with a 32MB TNT2 video card. I think that's the key - some newer games don't like the old (obsolete) Voodoo cards.

The tnt 2 is excellent , I have a 32mb NVIDIA TNT2, if you have room below your agp slot , throw a bigger cooler and fan on that sucker!
WORTH IT !!

like Nightwolf^.`.^ said turn down the resolution, draw distance, & disable the blur in GTA3's settings
GTA3 runs ok my comp (i just need the savegame fix)
Win98 isn't the problem you just need to goto Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
here's my comp spec if yur interested
Win98 SE
Intel Celeron 433
40GB HD
160MB RAM
32MB NVidia Geforce 2
gonna update my procc to at least a 1.3GHz
i dont recomend Voodoo based Video Card i personally think NVidia & ATI are the best Video Card company's out there
Draw distance is nothing
I turned trails off but they are still there, trails are the bullets right?
I never saw a blur option though
I put on the save game fix but that didnt work, I installed my motherboard drivers, I though that would help because of the onboard sound card
still frezes

http://www.pricewatch.com/
$32 - GeForce2 MX400 64MB
It runs ok, it just freezes. I dont think it is video, because of the thing in the readme about an onboard sound card.
I split the money on this computer with my brother and he dosent have any money to pay for upgrades so I cant upgrade
<_<
Ok, this is weird, it dosent freeze when I havve the sky cam on. What dose sky cam have that the other views dont?

i think it's less heavy, because you can't see the horizon and stuff. Your pc doesn't have to render so many objects any more...
This is rediculous, im going to get a new video card
