I don't know if anyone else here has had the problem that EDonkey is terribly slow. I was only getting downloads at max 3k/s.
Now I have tried Emule, which uses the same servers. It seems to be a much better client, and I am regularly getting steady download speeds of 30k/s for the more popular files.

Give it a try if E Donkey is slow for you!

eMule is a much better client than edonkey. If you configure it right, keep the server list up to date and learn a few tricks along the way you should have no problems with downloads. A lot of people get low speeds on donkey network clients because they don't realise they have a low ID and only have access to about 5% of available sources.

How many people are online sharing in donkey network?
I guess much less than in FastTrack network?

Less people, but everyone shares.

if you look at this

server:adanet
users 50000
files:3339880

if you scale that one server(famous) to fasttrack, you get this ratio

63/170

in favor of fastrack....... :blink:

what did i do wrong?
i did this
let x = fasttrack users
let y = fastrack files
let a = emule users
let b = emule files
note, i didnt do that im just doing it so the equation will be similar

x/a and got 63 (ish)
a/b and got 170 (ish)

anyone wanna show me up? i think emule shares a lot more than fastrack......but......

VB

Emule/Edonkey/Overnet :

3,339,880 / 50,000 = 67 files per user

Kazaa/Grokster :

591,582,917 / 3,293,027 = 180 files per user

But, this doesn't say anything about filesizes and quality.

k good thats what i did the first time.....

but i think you are right: it depends as a lot of those fasttrack are leechers sharing crap filels, and plus things get released on edonkey more

I think one confounding variable left out of that equation is that on the donkey network, even though all those users are listed as sharing all those files - the fact is they could only have a few meg of them.

This is a bit of something I posted a while ago in that huge Unreal thread -

....I agree with most of your comments about Donkey. It is excellent for getting 'big stuff' - especially disc images of new games but I do occasionally get the same speed from it as fast track (it is possible) - its just the frequent bouts of inactivity and unavailability that make it a pain. One of the main benefits of the program is also one of its downfalls. Due to the clever way it works you actually share the stuff that you are still downloading and have no say in who gets it from you (it will just keep taking uploads until your stream is full). This is good because there are no leaches but bad because many people can be sharing the same file yet none of them actually have the full thing. Because of this (in theory anyway), if only one person had it to start with and they stop sharing before its 'out there', thousands of people could end up sharing it without anyone ever having a chance of getting the damn thing). That said, it is well worth a look if you are after the very latest games....

It's out of context but I hope it still makes sense.

As a footnote to that though - eMule will actually tell you the last time it found the file you are downloading complete (along with a lot more cool stuff eDonkey doesn't show) - which is nice :D

Let me just say, that I've never tried emule. I've only used edonkey and overnet.

My bout with edonkey lasted about 20 minutes. I couldn't connect to anyone or anything and I have a cable modem. So, I read where it was suggested for people with broadband to give overnet a try, which is still in it's developmental stages.

The more I use overnet, the more I like it. No corrupted files ever off of overnet. Overnet has a built-in feature where as it is downloading the little "slivers" of file, if it downloads a corrupt "sliver" it discards it and redownloads that piece again.

For the average new game bin file (~700 MB), it takes appr 2 days for it to come in (some quicker, some slower than that) but they are virtually guaranteed to be perfect the first time around.

Right now, I'm currently downloading the NBA Live 2003 (EA Sports) bin file. It's coming in pretty slow. It fluctuates, but the average download rate would probably be around 5 kb/s, if I had to guess. I have almost 290 MBs out of 690 MBs so far.

The main advantage to KaZaA/Fasttrack I would say right now is the fact that on Fasttrack you can get multiple people to download from at a singletime, where that rarely seems to happen on overnet. So, there is a question of speed.

However, like Dawn said, you are constantly sharing your files on overnet/edonk/emule. That's due to the fact that you don't have to have a complete file for people to download from. The programs use a sig2dat type calc and people can download the little slivers of a large file you have so far.

Right now, I have a 10.8 kb/s download and a 21.3 kb/s upload going on with overnet. And, that's pretty much the ratio all the time. In fact it's more like 5/30+ most of the time, so you are definitely not leeching if you are using this system. There is always someone uploading useful data off of me if I have the program on (normally, more like a half dozen people) and that especially goes for the fact that I deal with some of the most popular files on ShareReactor.

From what I understand emule is kind of like KaZaA lite for Fasttrack. It's definitely a more popular program than edonk for those that are aware of it. But, that's just it.

My guess would be that overnet could beat both edonk and emule out if it keeps improving, though.

Wow, my download/upload just shot up to 30+/30+ right after I wrote the above message.

Maybe someone intercepted my post to this board. :)

gumby, you might want to run ad-aware to remove that UCmore crap Overnet installs. I got it when I tried Overnet out a couple days ago.

In the right hubs, nothing beats Direct Connect. I go to the hubs with the fastest speeds so I usually get 800-1000kB/s, about 2-4 times faster than Kazaa. I have never gotten high speeds with Overnet, eDonkey or WinMX, unless you define fast speed to equal 4kB/s.

I had NO success in getting overnet installed (because it needs that .NET crap), and my experience with eDonkey wasn't much better, very slow connections etc.

I had a lot more success with eMule (the way it configuring servers seems a lot better). Unfortunately, because of the way my isp drops my connection every 2 hrs (max) I have to use a proxy server to make sure the thing comes back up again, and eMule doesn't currently have a proxy option. But if I try to use it with Sockscap the damn thing crashes as soon as I get a connection.

I understand the next version will support proxy, so as soon as that is available I will start using it for real.

Thanks for the advice, RN.

The next version of Overnet is supposed to be free of the Microsoft .Net stuff, Lynx. Which should significantly cut down on the install time.

The fact that you don't need to deal with servers is what sets Overnet apart from emule/edonk. But, unless you have broadband, I could see how Overnet might not work for you at all.

I guess, similar to KaZaA, Overnet acts as its own server. When you first start it, Zone Alarm asks you if you want it to connect and then asks you if you want it to act as a server.

I'll look out for the next version of Overnet. You never know, I might just get the chance of having broadband in a year or two (maybe it will even catch on at British Telecom). In the meantime, I'll have a look at it if it doesn't need .Net

I use edonkey and the lite bot which i agree is sooooooo ssssslllllllllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwww.
But the solution is to download about 10 files at a time. Granted say they are all movies they wont complete for a few days but add the speeds of all downloads together and it begins to fill ur bandwidth. :)

;) I tryed to install overnet and Edonkey could not get either to work.
