There are about 3,500,000 people on the network sharing 650,000,000 files.
If you can come up with some way of monitoring all that let me know. I may have a business proposition for you.
Oh BTW thats not a static number, increases by about 100,000 people per week... and the number of files by more.
The REAL nasties (eg Kiddy Porn) dont use the network...its too public.
We lot are just a lot of people that dont care too much about overpaid movie makers and record companies. Of course these overpaid bastards do their best to track us down but....

I downloaded something by mistake back when I first started on p2p, it was a video titled Vikie or something like that, at the time I was trying for video's of an 80's star named vickie something or other. Well if you do a search I am sure you will still find this sick shit and shared by many people. I do not understand, I was very ill after starting that vid out, just disgusting.
That's what i thought TBH... why would you share anything dodgy on such an open platform - in fact u would share it at all beats me?? i think people just rename stuff to make it look dodgy for some unknown reason.

since no one seems to care, i will tell will what he will do to make sure they will not catch him
will:
1. when you are done searching, hit purge searches.
2. when you are done viewing, use an incinerator
3. when you are done with that, restart kazaa and make sure there are no traces left
4. if you are super paranoid, start back at step one and dont download

Well I can tell you that on mine even if I restart my computer a million times it wont change. I have to unplug my cable modem, let sit for 48 hours, plug it back in, and hope that it changed.
You probably have the same deal.
Try (in command prompt) 'ipconfig /release' followed by 'ipconfig /renew', you should get a new ip immediately.
When you get an ip, you get a 'lease time', usually a couple of days. If you don't renew it within that time, it is invalid. But by default, after half the lease time has expired your network connection will automatically renew it (also if you reboot).
But if you use 'ipconfig /release' you are telling your network provider that you are giving up the lease on that ip. Then, when you renew you should get the first ip your network provider has available.
Of course, if your provider has allocated you a static ip, you will always get the same ip back, and in any case you may get the same ip if it happens to be the first one available.

Thanks lynx, that's what I figured was going on (my old IP being the first one availble). It's kind of a bother, hard to get a new IP for those times when you just need a new one.
Is there anyway when renewing your IP you can refuse a certian one? Makeing it possible to force a new IP even if your old one is the "first availble"?

I have the adult content filter on now, but, lilke everyone else I'm sure, I looked at everything my searches returned when I first started, flicking through the pop-ups, reading descriptions. I could not believe what was out there in the way of really, really, no I mean REALLY sick shit. If people wanna trade "regular" porn that doesn't seem too bad to me, but all that stuff available about incest, pedo etc. etc. made me want to puke. Flame away all you want, but IMHO those bastards should be tracked down and castrated.

Outside of Fasttrack/Kazaa Lite, there is BearShare on the Gnutella network which has very good Big Brother killers added to it in the latest version/beta. The beta-testers and makers have added a hostiles.txt file which blocks ips and ip ranges -- it is added to via constant use of BearShare, plus newer versions add more entries to it.
Problem with it is the Gnutella network lacks some/much of the content found on fasttrack and getting good/great connectivity is still almost an art form (requires some tweaking of hosts.)
Also, up until >v4.0.6, BearShare was unstable due to serious bugs. However, the latest v4.1.0 and v4.2.0beta1 seem really stable according to most of the beta-testers and programming crew.

If i might go back to wills original post and see if there is a clear answer...
regardless of purging searches and "incinerating" any "dodgy" files....
...i think the question is: when is he is in the process of downloading the file, cant the uploader (say it is a "trap", eg the RIAA trying to protect a music file or the government trying to catch pervs) track him down at that point?
And then, because i am not the most computer savvy person....i dont know about chaging IP addresses, but cant the person track him down right at that moment when he is still using htat IP address?

A little on IP renewals... Your PC recieves an IP with a lease time at half lease it will attempt to renew, if the request is not answered it will attempt again at 7/8 of remaining time untill success or lease expires. A system will ALWAYS attempt to keep it's last IP and will only recieve a new IP if someone else has the old one. So basically from this the only way to get a NEW IP is to keep /release /renew until you get a different IP. OK so that was a quick intro to TCP/IP and DHCP IP leasing.
Some cool commands to try from the command prompt are:
nslookup
netstat (try -a switch and scare yourself)
tracecert (more advanced version of ping
for all of the above use the ? switch (netstat ?) to get help.
Lastly "bouncing", masquerading, correctly called Spoofing by the hacker community is the art of hiding your IP by routing your traffic via another PC (it's actually more advanced than that because your IP is stored in the packet so you need to not route your info through someone but have them send an IP packet on your behalf). So if anyone asks "Who are you" they get the last person you routed through nearest them. Check out the hacking sites to learn how... don't get side tracked by the porn though... focus. LOL.
For all those who are paranoid... If you are connected to the net BB knows about you, the thing is there are millions of others out there so the best advice is DON'T DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF! It is a bit like driving a car without a licence, the cops won't stop you unless you draw attention.
Sorry just had to be smartass.... and I hope that netstat -a doesn't scare you too much.

the thing is you can download somthing compleatly harmless like i did once and got a picture of two naked girls i reconised them from a tv show that my teanage daughter watches they are about 12 and compleatly naked even the filters on the kazza dont work that well as they can change the description and my kids can then upload that kind of stuff
