View Full Version : In The Early Days People Wanted To Share...

Where is the contribution lost in participation levels? What happened to our right to choose who we want to share our files with? Why was it replaced by a piece of software that is making this choice for us? Am I the only one who thinks it was a trojan horse cleverly devised to break down this p2p community?

As I'm waiting for my last download with k.lite to complete, I'm already looking for another p2p network. One that hasn't been spoiled by the greediness of the many and where you don't have to be from the peak of Olympus to keep your position in a download queue. Where sharing is not overthrown by transacting.

try eMule....

I'm running eMule for the first time right now. The configuration is kinda tricky but overall the client is quite promising:
1. Nice and fair anti-leech policy
2. Fast searches with loads of stuff I couldn't find on kazaa
3. Download speed is perfect.

Thanx for the tip Paul. I really used to like kazaa until p/l showed up and ruined things. I hope something will change on coming builds and kazaa can once again be the great client it was in the past. P2p benefits from diversity, not monarchy of a single network.

FWIW there ARE circumstances where people (like me) use the Cheater to assume deity status and turn off sharing temporarily because otherwise, with a 56KB modem I'd never get anything downloaded at all. When my download/s is/are done, or if things're going along at a reasonable pace -- which for me is about 4.0KB/sec lol -- I turn sharing back on. Sometimes my system is running for nothing BUT uploads.

;) You should share with the whole community and not be stingy.

I think the general consensus is that participation levels are a pretty shit idea, and hopefully that feedback will get back to Kazaa and they'll make some changes.

I still can't work out why participation levels were brought in, but I'm convinced there's some ulterior motive, it's not for the good of the community that's for sure.

What would be nice is if there was an option to "Ignore Participation Level of Uploading Users" which when set would leave the queues alone. Then at least you'd have the option to get your "right to choose" back.

;) WinMX had it where you just right clicked on a person and it showed you how many files they were sharing, then all you had to do was put them on ignore.

barbarossa your suggestion seems okay with me. Bear in mind though that you don't have to wait for a future build to disable p/l. If you use the version prior to 2.0 the p/l is disabled. Still, this only affects the uploads. Downloads will still suffer by the wide use of kazaa builds with the "trojan".
Kazaa nowadays is clearly commercially oriented and I think we can't expect any change to this in the future. These people don't even run a forum in their site where the members of this p2p community can express their thoughts. You can see what the accepted contact reasons are for them Contact kazaa (http://www.kazaa.com/us/contact/index.htm)
It's all about marketing their product.

*To FuNkY CaPrIcOrN: What on earth do you mean by stingy? I want to share with people that are sharing usefull stuff. I feel offended when people who only share bloody readme.txt and thumbs.db files or share nothing at all end up kicking me from available download slots and steal other fair sharers' place in my upload list, just because he shows up as a "Supreme Being". Sometimes I see a user downloading a good rare file from me and I'm dissapointed that the file won't go through. Some guru leech will kick him from the queue to get one of the popular files and the rare file will stay in my drive. Do you think that's healthy for p2p?

Not that i condone this, but not all readme.txt's are bad. Some are written by crack teams will serials for a program, others can be game walk-thrus. Others can be movie scripts, or song lyrics. And also, .TXT is smaller than .DOC B)

i know that is probably really rare, but just trying to stand in their (possibly legit) shoes.

the makers of kazaa lite should take the Disable Sharing of Files OFF so it FORCES everyone to share ...but they could move the files to a diffrent folder so it wouldnt be 100% but it would work...

I don't think that there is any practical way to enforce filesharing. I don't think any of us would be happy if there was. Look at it this way...there isn't any mechanism (at least in most places in the world) that actually prevents any of us from committing a crime (although the consequences may be savage)--i.e. no one is hanging out & watching us 24/7 to make sure we don't do that. I sure wouldn't like if someone was. And I don't think that I want a cop of any kind on the internet, whether it's a program or not.

Just gotta depend on the individual ethic. If it isn't there it's not going to be pounded in by anybody. Besides, these guys (not sharing) think it's a big game to get away with that.

Remember, when some dork challenged Dorothy Parker to use the word horticulture in a complete sentence, she replied "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think."
