View Full Version : Participation Level Sucks

explanation.

i have a 64k/128k ISDN connection.

because ISDN has to redial every 2 hours it is a bit hit and miss whether you connect at the full 128 or it fails to bundle te lines and you only get 64k. (diffference is 15k/sec or 7.5k/sec).

if i upload at over 50% of my bandwidth i loose download bandwidth. i.e. if i am connected at 64k and upload at more than 4k/sec my download drops to about 3k/sec.
therefore to prevent download slowdown i limit my uploads to 4k a second (although would prefer to allow 8k a sec if i'm connected at 128k but as i have no way of guarenteeing a 128 connection i have to play safe and limit to 4k sec).

anyhow ....

Pre particiaption level.

used to share 30 gigs of films and mp3's. limited slots to 2 and let people download whatever they wanted. although only 4ksec upload the pc was running 24/7 so 350 MB a day - over 2gig a week.

now.

using the above method my participation dropped to about 25 and hovered there. so i thought sod this i am shareing 30GB to the best of my bandwidths ability. so i stopped sharing completely, changed my upload bandwidth to 8192 and ran the cheat to get a decent participation level. to maintain this level i now have to continually cheat. if i share files as my upload allowance setting is now maxed out people with DSL rape my connection and i can't download at anything over2k/sec.

so i share nothing.

this sucks, i would rather share stuff but particiaption level means that if i want to download to my maxmum bandwidth (or anything near it) i have to cheat and not share stuff.

why not remove this participation level bullsh!t?

;) So you are not shareing nothing huh......you just opened up a can of worms boy,we don't like your kind....get use to people having DSL and CABLE,more and more people are going to broadband, and yes I thing I can agree with you in some way,the particiaption level does suck, but it was a good idea at first.I am on DSL and sometimes I only download at 5kbs,so you being on a 64k/128k ISDN has got to be slow.Man there are so many discussions about this lately, about slow dowloads....PAUL put this in the F.A.Q. :D

One more thing -jjones-,please register, only 400 more members untell the big 3000,I think Paul should give the 3000th member a free Poll. :D

Why do you use p2p sharing program like kazaa for then, go grab your stuff elsewhere (plain internet). Or share! PL doesn't work well. See plenty people with pl0 upload from me. If they share no prob. otherwise you can hit the road.
If you want to keep up pl1000 you have to stop downloading. It works that way for you as it does for me. Go get DSL or something like that. You guys think the dsl and cable guys with a bunch of bandwith get it for free! They pay for it all as well. I have no problem with it if you limit your upload, but don't complain then your cheater isn't working as you want to. You can't always get what YOU want. ;)

can't get broadband where i live.

like i say i would prefer to share files - like i used to. but participation makes this unrealistic.

then you can't participate to filesharing.... Or share and live the life of one who downloads with a pl0 wich actualy is no shame. Think 80% of the community does. BTW cheaters won't work in kl 202 as you can read elsewhere so it all will be over soon... I have a little hope to convince you that sharing is the only way p2p will survive B) B)

trouble is a low pl means more queing less downloading.

as i have a 2 hour cutoff queueing sucks as i keep losing place in queue for reconnect.

as in the thread title i think this sucks, i have to stop uploading/shareing so i can continue to download at the same rate i could with 1.7.2.

surely this is a backwards step?

why not calc the pl on:

amount shared (GB) * upload slots
-----------------------------------------------------------
download speed limit/upload speed limit

this seems a fairer method of calculation.

for example the current pl method sucks if...

you have a T3 connection with 5 slots available for upload. you share 300GBS of data and are downloading at 50k/sec. but the 5 upload slots are all 56k users uploading at a total of 5k/sec. your pl would suck ass even tho you are a good p2p sharer.

to make you feel even better.... my ISDN costs £26 to BT a month and then another £36 per month for an ISP.

Did you read the thread about BT wich gave speed problems to other klite downloaders???? Maybe you're blaiming the wrong thing.

This is why the system is fair, if no one cheats and everyone shares their files.
What do you think you pay a lot for T3 connection, you see lot of people upload at 100k you start to download get only 16k back, with all 56k/isdn guys added, your upload goes 500k your download is 50k (if your lucky), you can't imagine that frustration do you. Is it fair that those people have a pl of 1000 fairly gained?

to hit 500K of uploads to 56k and isdn users you would require about 50 slots available for upload?

please bear in mind 56k=5ksec and isdn = 7.5k/sec - in ideal conditions

i have shared/uploaded many GBs of data with 1.7.2 but this has become impractical since the introduction of pl.

like i said i have tried running with pl properly BECAUSE I LIKE TO SHARE MY FILES - but i had to draw the line when i end up only downloading a third of the data i could with 1.7.2 (64k isdn optimally gets 26mb an hour).

hence this thread

i WANT to share but cannot afford to take a hit in download performance when download performance via narrowband is crap in the first place.

In the end you're just a Leech not having the intention to share. If you want to share, you just DO. But the only thing you're interested in is
grab what you can http://members.home.nl/admit/giffies%20uploaded/punchy3.gif f*ck the others.

And i was so stupid to react to this... <_<

I know how you feel jetje - I am allowed 5gig up and 5gig down from my service provider, then it becomes a pay per gigabyte thing - and I am almost always over - and it isn't from downloading. I happily do this, because it makes it easier for everyone to get stuff. The funny part is if everyone was sharing, and the leeches would just disappear, download and upload speeds would be better for everyone because no one's upload slots would be filled by these useless people. Most times I keep ten upload slots available. If there's something I want to download and my bandwith is being sucked up by uploads, I might drop that down to five for a little while, but I always keep upload slots available. What's an extra $20 or even $50 a month considering all the stuff we get for free? So what if it takes a little longer to download it - it's free - talk about being hypocritical. <_<

:D That is why I love DSL,FOR $50 a month you get all the music you can download,a cd cost upwards of $15 a piece. :D
