This is a file sharing network. That means that it's important to share the files you download with the next guy. If people don't do this, pretty obviously the system runs slower and slower and ultimately stops.

There have been several threads by people who are having trouble sharing their files. While they make a lot of files available the uploads aren't happening. This seems to fall into 3 categories: disabled share box in options, database problems, and excessive abortions.

If your share box is disabled, enable it.

If your share box is enabled, you have a lot of files to share, but Kazaa reports that you're sharing nothing, your database is in the process of being rebuilt (give it some time) or is corrupted (delete it and it will automatically rebuild). The larger the number of files you're sharing, the longer the database takes to compile, and unfortunately there is nothing to indicate that it is currently compiling.

My problem has been that every time someone would try to download from me, the connection would abort after 64Kb (rarely 128Kb or up to 320Kb). I could look at the traffic screen and see 60 aborts and 0 completeds. Clearly something was wrong (and has been happening to others).

Here's my new discovery: I changed the maximum number of results from 600 to 200, rebooted and DIDN'T USE SPEED UP. Immediately people were able to DL complete movies, but of course my own DLs were just sitting there. So I started Speed Up after starting KL, and everything's still working well. I don't know if the problem was related to the maximum number of results, or to Speed Up, but I suspect the latter causes a problem if you launch KL with Speed Up. If you're having this problem too, please try this fix and let us know if it worked for you too.

I use Speed Up to start KL and don't have any problems. I think that's what is so annoying, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the problems.

It worked for you, so that's ok, but you don't know which one it was, or whether it was both together (or even just coincidence that it fixed itself at that time).

If anyone has the same problems, I would suggest they try your solutions individually, then perhaps we can get some feedback.

It will be nice if we can finally pin down one of these problems. If it is the 600 search results option, then it is probably corrupting part of the program, in which case the potential problems caused could be enormous, not just the one you have observed.

It looks like it's Speed Up. After I turned SU on from within KL, after about 5 minutes I started getting the abortion problem again. I turned SU off, keeping KL on, and waited for a while, but no one tried to download and the people who were in the midst of DLing aborted.

I exited KL, restarted KL (without rebooting) and everythings working well (1 abort out of 10 attempts, probably normal).

If we're both using the same version of SU, then the problem may lie in the settings for it. I'm using "FastTrack Accelerator 1.3.1" (so why is it called Speed Up? <grin>).

Same version, so here's my settings:

480 seconds between cycles
40 seconds between items
checked: limit searching to 6 items
checked: skip paused and queued
unchecked: Clear Downloaded and Erroneous
unchecked: Clear Uploaded and Erroneous
FastTrack Client: Other + path to kazaa.exe
unchecked: Load with Windows
unchecked: Shutdown when finished downloading

I don't know why it has 2 names either.
Btw, I've got my search limit set at 9999

I find a lot of these early aborts and completes are simply the dl going so slow it stops n the user end and says "more sources needed for them" and aborted to you. I've had songs do this and say "more sources needed". I then pause it and resume and it keeps dl'ing and may stop again but I do the same. When it says "aborted" or "completed" that's what has just poccured from my experience to the uploading user. The users though will start a completely new download of the same song or whatever media instead pausing and resuming multiple times to get a download at a slow speed. I send people a message telling them this(pause and resume "more sources needed items) and those who follow it get what their looking for. Others of course keep trying to dl the song the other way and fail.

Well it all seemed so conclusive yesterday. I'll change my Speed Up settings to match yours and see if that helps. My settings were 120 cycle, 30 item, Limit and Skip selected, both Clears unselected, Search was enabled with no other information, and both Load and Shutdown were disabled.

Nick is right though. I had a bloke just now try 6 simultanteous DLs. First one sent 1088 and aborted, 2nd sent 128 and aborted, the other 4 aborted after 64kb. I messaged him and asked him to try the Pause/Resume as Nick suggested, and he's now grabbing them at about 8KB/s each all at once!

Well, he finished and now I'm DLing from him and getting a max of 3kb/sec. <shrug>

I'll be trying Nick's tip everytime I get a fresh "more sources needed" from now on.

I appreciate both of your helps.
