Nice pic, where can I pick one of those up for me and the little woman?
BTW, took a hammer and chisel to my PS, don't see what that was supposed to accomplish, though.

Hi Pete.
Thanks for the post. I've been thinking of getting a PS2 for a little while now but would only do so if I could chip it. I checked out the link that you mentioned and I think that soldering the damn thing might be out of my league....I think I could probably find a place that does that though.
I read your post in the VERIFIEDS forum and was wondering if you could direct me to a good place to learn how to create/burn useable games from downloaded copies. Forgive me if this seems like a stupid question...it's all new to me!

Since Pete isn't on right now apparently, thought I'd give you a link to a site on burning/copying games Gameburnworld.com (http://www.gameburnworld.com/) There are some pop ups when you enter, hope that doesn't bother you.

Yeah, that (Magic 3) has been out for at least 3 months when I first saw it.
Then, I saw the photos of the guy taking the layers upon layers of PS2 components apart and hot-wiring the chip in and thought to myself:
My PS2 is fine just the way it is. :P

16 Screws to unscrew, 4 micro plugs to unplug, a steady hand and about 15 minutes.
Just think for every £40.00 game you buy I am making and playing for 25pence.
Now thats enterprising.

Yeah, don't forget the piece of double-sided tape needed to anchor the thing down, upside-down. :)
I need to do an internet search and find the photos again of just what exactly this entails, don't I?
Yeah, really easy. That's why every step of the process says if you accidently hit something or other you're screwed.
Hold on. Let me find the photos.
Also, if I remember this correctly, the "non-soldier" chip still needs to be soldiered. It just doesn't require "as much" soldiering. And, please don't tell me it doesn't, because if you actually show a picture of this thing, it has about a dozen little soldier nubbies on each side of it.
http://www.playstationchips.co.uk/pages/images/magic3.jpg
What do you suppose those are for?
The fact that I've never handled a soldiering iron in my life might have a little something to do with my tentativeness here.

They are harder to do than PS1 I must admit but after you done 1 or 2 it is childs play.
Each PS2 version that comes out is getting harder to do because they are making it harder to do of course.
But if there's a will then theres a way!!!!!!!

Listen, I'm not trying to bust your balls, I'm just telling you. I believe the count is 23 wires that need to be soldiered to various points throughout the console.
Well, they have to be soldiered on each end of those wires. That's 46 soldiers you have to make. And, they leave just enough soldier on that thing for each one.
Is this easy? I mean, have you done it? I'm just telling you, that I saw the photos of this process and from that moment on, it was no longer an option...for ME.
My hand isn't that steady. I don't want to spend $100 US dollars after I already spent $200 US dollars on the console and wind up with something that is worthless.
Especially when my wife just bought me a new DVD player for x-mas for $80 dollars.
The way I see it, the only thing I can't play at this moment are PS2 games on CD-Rs that have had half the info ripped out of them.
Maybe when I can get a good PS2 emulator (when they exist), I'll worry about PS2 games on CD-Rs (or DVD-R copies, by that time).

I have done over 10 PS2 and maybe 200 PS1s in my time but yes it is getting trickier.
I use bullet soldering which is injected solder direct to joints so it is quick and easy but you can take yours to somewhere local and pay about 60 bucks and have it done professionally if you want.
I just informing people that it can be done as maybe professionals are using this forum who want to maybe get involved.

Ah, I see.
I saw this chip months ago and I was starting to get my hopes up, but they got shot down when I started digging deeper and saw the guts of this thing and what was required.
I'm referring to the marketing of this thing to the average Joe, like myself, as "quick, easy, and painless".
I just know, there's no way I could do it right on the very first shot. If I knew someone who was reliable or if I could go back in time and get a PS2 with it already installed, then it might have been a different story.
The good news for people like myself, however, is that I understand that people have successfully created DVD-R's and DVD-RW's (movies) which the PS2 has played. I don't remember which program off hand that they used (I know it wasn't Nero), but they used a program that created copies the PS2 would accept.
I think that's sufficient evidence that when we all get our DVD burners down the line, we'll likely be able to play both DVDs and PS2 games copied onto DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs.

By then the micro disc and the memory cards will be here.
I came back from Hong Kong on business in September and Sony already have developed PS3 which will use the memory cards as games and it will be the half the size and much more dynamic.
The games of course will probably cost just as much considering the price of the existing memory cards they sell now.
Dvd and Cd will be out dated in about 5 years just like Video tapes and cassetes.
So I guess you act now to reap the benefits.

tried copying a ps2 game onto a dvd disc as somebody suggested to me claiming that that was why my cdr copies wouldn't work but all that happened was I wasted a disc

Well video and cassettes have been around for 20+ years.
I think you under rate the mighty CD-R pete. I know bigger better, & faster stuffs on the way but if you think 5 years is all thats left of DVD your trippin!

They are on sale now at about £140 and you can take them to computer fairs around the UK and they will chip them for you there and then for about £50.00 - £60.00 and they test them for you.
I beleive you can maybe buy them already chipped for about £160 but they are not new consoles so its up to you then again when you chip your new one it has no manufacturers warranty then so the gamble is yours.
I still have my PS1 that I chipped 3 years ago and it still works great so I expect the PS2 to be trouble free.

I thought they were just developing blue lazor DVD technology?
You know, where the new, blue lazor DVD's are going to hold 27+ Gigabytes of memory?
I don't see how mini-disks and memory cards are going to beat out that as the wave of the future. Unless I'm missing something here.
Sony also thought memory card cameras were going to catch on big and it's the cd burner cameras that everyone wants.
I could foresee a scenario where the next generation game consoles consist of Sony with either mini disks or memory cards and Microsoft with blue lazor DVD's, based on what you said.

I guess the USA will be the first to know as us in Europe seem to always be behind and as everything is getting smaller and more compact it will be inevitable that mini discs and memory cards will be an impact.

Most of theses computer fairs are genuine traders and you get to know them as they are there every week and they give you genuine receipt and gaurantees.
You should spend a day at them as you can get some real bargains and good info from them, usually if they havent got what you want then they will get it and contact you.

Pete, would you happen to know off hand if there is anything like this (fairs, expos, conventions, etc) going on in the US where they chip PS2s?
I've tried searching the net, but I just can't find anything like you mentioned. It might just be an option that isn't available here. I think I might consider it if I could find someone reliable that would guarantee their work, as you said.

I dont know where in the USA but you can visit the many games forum and maybe get some links there os contact the sites that supply the chips in USA as they must supply these people who chip them.
I live in Manchester and people come from all over to visit the Bowlers computer fair which is held every Saturday indoors at Bowlers Sports Centre, Trafford Park, Manchester.
It is the biggest one I know and they do everything there, you can even buy a PS1 or PS2 already chipped.
As for other parts of the UK check out Google as there are links there but I dont know what they do at these.
