Remove Norton *completely* safely
This little program, will dump all traces of your Norton programs They say its only to be used when you can't uninstall it (corrupted install). use it anyways, and get rid of all the extra registry stuff that the regular uninstall doesn't take care of

  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you can still open your Norton program -- Record your product or activation key. For instructions, read Locating your product or activation key.
    • If you cannot open your Norton Program -- Go on to step 2.
  2. Close all open programs.
  3. Click the following link to begin the download for SymNRT.exe:

    SymNRT.exe

    Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  4. Print or bookmark this page.
    As part of the steps that follow, you restart your computer several times. Having the information at hand makes it easier to finish these steps.
  5. On the Windows desktop, double-click SymNRT.exe, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Restart the computer if asked.
  6. On your desktop, right-click SymNRT.exe, and then click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  7. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
    • In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
  8. In the My Computer window, click (or double-click) Local Disk (C > Program Files.
  9. In the Program Files window, delete any of the following folders that are present:
    • Norton AntiVirus
    • Norton Internet Security
    • Norton SystemWorks
    • Norton Personal Firewall
Go to the section "Download and run two files."


Download and run two files
These files remove some older Norton files if they exist, and they repair a Microsoft file.
  1. Follow the instructions for your Web browser:
    • Internet Explorer. Click the following link to download the first file:

      SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

      Save the file to the Windows desktop.
    • Firefox. Right-click the following link and then click Save Link As to download the first file:

      SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

      Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  2. On the Windows desktop, double-click SYMMSICLEANUP.reg,
  3. Click Yes when prompted, and then click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions for your Web browser:
    • Internet Explorer. Click the following link to begin the download of the first file:

      MSIFIX.bat

      Save the file to the Windows desktop.
    • Firefox. Right-click the following link and then click Save Link As to begin the download of the first file:

      MSIFIX.bat

      Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  5. On the Windows desktop, double-click MSIFIX.bat. A black window may appear very briefly.
Go to the section "Reinstall LiveUpdate."

Follow the instructions in How to download and install LiveUpdate.

Go to the section "Reinstall your Norton programs."


Reinstall your Norton programs
Reinstall you programs. For help with this, read Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation or after you see error messages.


By running SymNRT, Rnav2003, RnisUPG, and SYMCLN, you have removed every part of the programs supported by SymNRT, as well as Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, and Norton SystemWorks 2003 and earlier.


Technical Information:
Remove programs that cannot be removed with SymNRT

Do you have any of these programs installed?
  • Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier
  • Norton AntiVirus Professional 2003 or earlier
  • Norton SystemWorks Standard and Professional 2003 or earlier
  • Norton Internet Security 2003 or earlier
  • Norton Personal FireWall 2003 or earlier
If you need to remove any of these programs and you have not installed the 2004 or 2005 version of that program, read Uninstalling and reinstalling your Symantec program after you see error messages.

why dont they just add this to their program so people dont have to search.

yea thats what i meant. When i tired to uninstall it one time my interweb stopped working.

I had to reformat becuase something happened with the regestry when i used one of their programs to remove it.

SYMNRT is the first basic step in removing norton from a corrupt install. They also have an MSI cleanup utility on their website that does some additional work on the registry. The biggest problem is that 2 reboots are required after running SYMNRT to remove everything. If you try to reinstall another NAV product before a second reboot, the installation will fail. There is a complete tutorial available at http://www.schrockinnovations.com/removenav.php that setps you through the process.
