I wanna try Ubuntu, but which one to download?

They have three options, Desktop, Server, and Alternate.
I'll be using it to do the normal stuff; go on the internet, write some documents, and maybe even some filesharing if don't do it in Windows. I'm thinkin I need the Desktop CD, but I just wanna be sure. Thanks in advance for any help!

The descriptions make it seem like the desktop disc is just the live cd (you boot from the cd instead of installing to your hard drive, a lot slower) and the server is the one that you actually install to your hard drive.
No idea why they called them that.
Alternate is definately not the one you want.

Under desktop it says:The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later.I guess I'll go with the Server though, since it just installs it.

Ah well in that case I don't know which.
Server might not have a GUI, or some programs could be replaced wit server apps like apache and stuff.

thats the one you want if you want to install it on your machine. its about 700 megs the last time i downloaded it.
the server version has no gui and the alternative version just lets you do multiple installs across many machines at once and other useful things for businesses and schools.

^ Yup, the desktop version worked. I booted into it as a Live disk and then clicked "install" on the desktop, and it installed. I am now dual booting Windows MCE and Ubuntu. :)
I have a question though. Do I need an antivirus and a firewall, and any antispyware apps for Linux?

You dont need an antivirus and firewall for linux mainly cause its very secure and few virus writters target it. However, I guess it would be wize. I think ubuntu has its own built-in firewall (not sure, i know other linux distros have it though). As for antivirus, all i know of is ClamAV (http://www.clamav.net/). But maybe someone else can give you suggestions. :)

The version they use is older than the current one, but there's no difference, just some steps come at different times of the installation.

Yes, ubuntu installs a boot loader (usually grub or lilo.. i prefer grub). Find a guide and it should be really easy.

It uses Grub. It was really easy to setup after following the tutorial that I posted. The hard part is using the OS, lol.

you only really need to use clamav if your running a mail server for windows machines which i doubt. iptables are pretty useful if you want to build some firewall rules guide (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Iptables)
