Children of Men- dunno why I resisted this film for so long, it's very well executed and much more interesting than the trailers led me to believe.
Many films with such an upfront political/philosophical agenda neglect the technical aspects of filmmaking but this does not...the urban warfare scenes are absolutely harrowing- the most convincing I've ever seen.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).
"Behold 'Nautilus', the sword of the oceans"
Though imdb rated it badly, as is their habit, I must say re-viewing this movie tonight rekindled the sense of entertainment that we inevitably get upon watching this picture. It's fun, has some very cool gadgets (like the "automobile", to name but one) for 1899, and Sir Sean Connery giving us one of his last stellar performances.
A great popcorn flick with an interesting and entertaining plot with some swift twists and turns.
7.5/10 here.

Commence breath holding....NOW!
Let's see...in the past few days I've watched-
The Lost Boys- Keifer Sutherland shows flashes of his brilliance to come. Much like Malcolm McDowell, I think Sutherland will age into a great bad guy.
Incredibly dated haircuts, clothes and special effects.
Lake Placid-surprisingly meh for a movie that stars a 30ft crocodile. I've no more tolerance for scary flicks that make the characters consistently do the stupidest things when under pressure. If the 5 year old in the seat behind you knows not to go back in the water then why doesn't the "croc expert"?
Nurse Betty- a trifle with Morgan Freeman and Renee Zellweger, two actors I'll watch in almost anything.
Knocked Up- sporadically amusing but not enough to jump on the Apatow bandwagon. Completely predictable once disbelief that Catherine Heigl would EVER hook up with Seth Rogan is suspended.
Short Circuit- I gave up after 20 minutes. Even then I could see the inevitability of the Sheedy/ Guttenberg romance and I'd already decided that Robot5 was a weeny.
Just to lift my spirits I treated myself to another viewing of Serenity...it never fails to remind me why I like to watch movies.
BTW...Idol, I assume you were referring to Hunt For Red October?

I like Sean Connery but his imposing presence makes it hard for him to not appear to be parodying himself at times.
He did do a couple of of my favorite movies though, The Man Who Would Be King and Robin and Marion.
Short Circuit- I gave up after 20 minutes. Even then I could see the inevitability of the Sheedy/ Guttenberg romance and I'd already decided that Robot5 was a weeny.

Forget Connery Shaman Steve Guttenburg is God.
I think that six Police Academy movies more than prove my point(okay he was only in 3 but his legacy lives on).

Inside Man- Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster.
An extremely clever movie about a bank robbery. I watched it twice just to see if I had been cheaply misled but no, it played fair, I just wasn't as smart as it was.
The three main leads are all big-time Hollywood stars and it shows...they're great.

What can I say, I loves me some Jodie Foster and I really liked this film.
Almost a genre mash-up, Ms. Foster morphs from Mary Tyler Moore to Ellen Ripley ("I want my dog back!") and is completely believable during every step.
Nicky Katt has a great supporting role, which is always a bonus.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith-Brad and Angie.
I've never seen this film in toto having only caught dribs and drabs on TV, so when it showed up at the library I thought, "Oh, why not?".
Yes, it is totally preposterous- pick any of the set-piece scenes and the logic holes are Grand Canyon sized- BUT...
From now on, whenever I hear a film critic talk about "onscreen chemistry", this is the film I'll think of.
This is the film that created Brangelina and the attraction is obvious.
On a side note-
Being a normal human being, I can only vaguely imagine a universe where the option "Hmmm, Angie or Jenn ("Jenn" being JenniferfuckingAniston!)?" would be available to me.
Just sayin...
Even after willingly and happily suspending all disbelief however, there is one major flaw that just can't be overlooked.
Never- not even for one second-did I think that Angie couldn't absolutely destroy Brad's butt one on one.
When it comes to cinematic ass-kickery she rates in the top three.
Put her in the next James Bond movie and you'd have a win of epic proportions.

The Graduate-Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross.
Dustin Hoffman's first starring role is in this Mike Nichols 1967 blockbuster.
The plot is so inane that it actually beggars description but the film not only launched Hoffman's career, it also featured Bancroft's creation of the ubercougar Mrs.Robinson and a soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.
Katherine Ross is luminous, which is pretty much all that was ever required of her in any of her roles.
Amazing special effects...Hoffman's Alfa Romeo appears to always start and run- something a real Alfa was never known to do.
Since the movie came out long before most of you were born, it also can serve as something of a documentary.
Note for instance, the opening scene on the airplane.
Everyone is wearing a suit and tie, the ladies all have hats...in 1967 people dressed up to fly.
The phones all have cords and rotary dials.
No one has a gun or a computer.
Boy, it was weird back then.

Really, only 7.5?
I'm not at all fond of the "10 point" rating scale (unless the user thoughtfully provides an example of a 1 and a 10 so we have some basis for comparison...)but I'd give Blow a higher score than that.
I think it's one of Johnny Depp's best performances and the story is intriguing (and true).

The Boys From Brazil- Gregory Peck, James Mason, Lawrence Olivier.
In one of his few "cast-against-type" roles, Peck plays Dr. Joseph Mengele, the "Angel of Death", one of the most notorious Nazi war criminals.
Today the story isn't as farfetched as it seemed in 1978 (the source book, by Ira Levin, who also wrote Rosemary's Baby came out in 1976) and the acting holds up pretty well with the exception of the boy(s), played by Jeremy Black (who apparently had no other film roles).
Many top-notch actors in supporting roles including a very young Steve Guttenberg (who gets the story rolling and then does the honorable thing by getting killed early on).
This would make a great doublefeature with Marathon Man.

The Lookout- Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick).
This movie, a classic heist film with a twist, has all the bases covered- interesting concept, believable casting (with one exception*) and professional execution.
I was intrigued from the beginning, and thankful that the setup was so slow as it allowed the main character to be fully developed (and the audience to invest in him) before the plot twists start their inevitable unraveling.
Recommended.
*The character "Bone" looked like a reject from The Matrix and stood out so obviously that any small town Sheriff's Office would arrest him on general principals.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind-Sam Rockwell, George Clooney (also directed), Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore.
This is one of the weirdest movies you'll ever see.
Based on the unbelievable (literally!) autobiography by Chuck Barris (Wiki here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confessions_of_a_Dangerous_Mind)) this film- which tanked at the boxoffice- features some amazing cameos (Brad Pitt and Matt Damon...for about 5 seconds), a disparate look (each decade is shot differently) and a protagonist you hate and like at the same time.
I saw this when it came out and had a very WTF? impression then, a revisit last night just reinforced that initial feeling.
I'd recommend it just for the experience of watching a film that- for me- is so ambiguous.

Hellboy II-The Golden Army
There is no denying the visual genius of Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labryinth- which Hellboy mimics shamelessly) but I felt the story was weaker than the first iteration.
I realize that summer blockbuster films are all about the grand setpieces- and this flic doesn't disappoint in that respect- but the humor and logic of the first Hellboy were missing for me, so the big scenes seemed like exercises in filmmaking rather than a coherent story.
I also missed David Hyde Pierce as the voice of Abe Sapien.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story- John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer.
This biopic of the "legendary" Dewey Cox is exactly backwards from most films of the ilk.
The music- which spans from early rock and roll up to the nineties- is pitch perfect in detail and execution. In fact, some of the songs ("Walk Hard") are actually quite catchy, while others ("Let's Duet") are hilarious.
The storyline though just doesn't live up to the quality of the preproduction.
Fitfully amusing but not consistent enough to rise to Spinal Tap level, the film ultimately disappoints because it's obvious that the talent and desire were there but the final mix doesn't quite gel.

Welcome To Collinwood- Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy and Patricia Clarkson.
The story of a robbery doomed from the beginning by improbability, ineptitude and sheer idiocy.
Produced by George Clooney (who makes a small appearance and also teamed with Rockwell in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind), this amusing tale could almost be seen as a practice run for the far more popular Ocean's franchise.
An easy way to kill a few hours.

The Crying Game- Stephen Rea, Jaye Davidson.
I would venture that this is one of the most original films I've ever seen and certainly one of the most labyrinthine plots.
If you're lucky and no one has spoiled it by trying to describe the story, by all means, see it.
The Accused- Jodie Foster (won Oscar for her role), Kelly McGillis.
A film with a definite- and not at all disguised- agenda.
Foster plays a rape victim who is not at all the "good girl" and may in fact have been "asking for it".
Somewhat formulaic, the film is worth a watch just to see another sterling Foster performance.

Great production values (especially if you're a fan of steampunk), good CGI (I assume that real polar bears wanted too much money) and Sam Shepard playing the role he's best known for- Sam Shepard.
Totally meh storyline, probably much more lucid if you've read the source book(s?).
Maddeningly, the ending is merely a bridge to the sequel, which, given the film's boxoffice performance, will probably never be made.
Give it a pass unless you have an empty afternoon and really want to see Nicole Kidman in some slinky faux forties haute couture.

Being John Malkovich- John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener and of course, John Malkovich.
One of the most inventive films I've ever seen, this script has an embarrassment of rich plot twists and clever visuals.
This is a story that could only be told via film...to describe it just sounds like tripping (although it makes perfect sense to watch).
Get off on the 7 1/2th floor and enjoy the ride.
Million Dollar Baby- Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman.
Sometimes Hollywood gets it right and this film deserved each of the four Oscars that it won.

Dog Day Afternoon- Al Pacino.
A Brooklyn nobody and two friends try to rob a bank.
It doesn't go well.
This film (based on real events) is less about the robbery than about Pacino's character, how he was driven to this desperate act and how he deals with it unfolding. It's a great performance.
Directed by Sidney Lumet, Dog Day Afternoon would be a wonderful double feature with Lumet's latest film, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, another character driven story of a robbery gone bad.
Enron: The Smartest Guys In the Room- a documentary about the largest corporate bankruptcy in American history.
A story told on the human level of arrogance, greed and unbelievable chutzpah, this movie exposes the dark underside of capitalism.
I was at times struck by sheer admiration for the balls exhibited by the principle players and then enraged by their cupidity- particularly galling are actual phone transcripts as the energy traders laughingly bring the world's seventh largest economy- California- to it's knees by artificially creating electricity shortages (2001's year long "rolling brown-outs") which ultimately resulted in Arnold Schwarzenegger's election as governor.
A very interesting film.

Charlie Wilson's War- Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julia Roberts.
Based on a true story- frankly, you just couldn't make this stuff up- this film is quite an oddity, albeit a quite entertaining one.
What's odd is the main character...the real Charlie Wilson is more handsome than Hanks and was much wilder/more decadent than portrayed in the film.
Snappy writing by Aaron Sorkin and the luminous Julia Roberts only add to the film's appeal.
Hoffman is great as well, and an almost dead ringer for the real Gust Avrakotos.

K-PAX- Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.
Spacey is Prot, who may or may not be an alien, and Bridges is a psychiatrist who becomes involved in his life.
Thought provoking because the script never reveals the answer- is Prot an alien or just a severely traumatized human?- in fact, that answer is almost irrelevant to the film's larger questions.
Nicely acted and beautifully photographed.
