tunneling help!!

Hi,
I am a student and our university provides us with a firewalled network access. Can anyone suggest me some gud tunneling techniques for downloading (torrents, ftp, etc) ?
One of the way is by using ssh tunnel... I have used it and got decent speeds but the biggest problem lies in finding out free ssh servers outside the univ. I tried a few but most of them do not allow this tunneling. Does anyone know about any such servers where I can get free shell access for this purpose. Or please suggest me some other ways that I can use for tunneling.
