I have also noted in several different places on this forum that a lot of people with a PL of 1 do not share and that I heard there was a hack of sorts to give them the 1. This in turn gives them more sharing rights than the people who share but are running older version or different clients. So I say , check them 2 times, send them a message, check them once more and block them if they do not reply or share files. Totally legit and proper in my book.

I agree with you that you should cut off anyone not sharing. I have had the same type of experience as you when sending a note asking people to share. Whenever I get a "leech" refuse to share (and I have had quite nasty ones) I refuse to share with him. I have heard a lot of excuses. All I want is to see is them share at least 1 file.
Whenever I say I refuse to share with one person I get the same reaction. "Oh you can't do that!!!". Well I say too bad they forget to see that he is refusing to share with all of us.
Just watch this thread. You will see people say all sorts of things meaning what we are doing is wrong. Well they can have their opinions. B)

1) no, you cant tell if they are sharing unless they specifically say they are not. it is possible even with 5 searches to not get through.
2) usernames still dont help, for the reasons i stated above. if you really want to kill leeches, then use KK or something, and end up cancelling many people who were ided as leechers but actually share......its your decision

2: it is perfectly legit to stop a leecher. personally, i almost never do it, because i don't have the energy to check all uploads. and i don't want to use the leechkiller either. too many apps are running as it is! besides, i wouldn't want to accidentally terminate someone who is sharing.

By the way don't use the KK app. as it will not work properly.
Whenever I have checked and found that "search finished without ant results" and have checked 3 times in a row, it is quite reliable. Maybe 1 person in 20 may come back and complain that he is sharing. Mostly I get "I'm new" or "I normaly share but not today" or "I don't have anything to share"(my favorite) or some version of "F**k you **sterd I want your files now!!"
So I think that checking 3 times will give me enough accuracy for me to take action.
By the way. I don't sit here all day trying to control this. I will check it from time to time only when I pass by.
It would be nice if there was an app that we could set to do the work for us but I have not found any that really work.

It's actually quite simple. If you're bored and have too much time, then ban everyone that's seems not to be sharing. Otherwise, just ban the ones not sharing AND having a PL over 300, which is what I'm doing. I don't care if someone with a PL of 1 doesn't share ... if he can download from you then that means your files are crap, because if your files were good then someone with such a low PL wouldn't have a chance to download from you. So please exchange your crappy files for something useful :lol:

Isn't the username kazaalite@kazaa the default username when you install KL? Maybe this guy/gal/whatever just didn't bother to change any of the settings. And what if this isn't just a single person, but several if not many who just didn't change the default username on KL?
I'm not trying to defend this user, but I guess this just points out the fact that posting usernames is useless.

The thing that always got me is, the people who have all the ability to share in the world... fast computer, big hard drive, fast (200k+/sec) connection, but they just instead click that little "disable sharing of other users box". When I was big into it, I used to run my cable modem connection 24/7, never checking my uploaded files, just letting them leech away. Hard to find honest people these days. It's just a simple violation of concepts, if nobody shares, why bother having a "sharing community"? But by me posting this, it's not like I'm gonna sway someone's decision to "I think i'm gonna share from now on". I'm sure everybody in this discussion forum are people that do share, and that actually make the p2p concept work.

I have been willing to share, even concerned that not many were able to upload from me, what am I doing wrong?? Was told that if someone had 0 participation level and aborted upload then it was credible there my PL was too low etc, and I have to improve it, bandwidth etc, and they probably just moved on. I have sometimes tried to PM someone if I see they have dropped out, to see whether anything was wrong when they aborted, but got nothing back from them.
Anyway better hurry up, in case computer starts freaking out soon from trojan problem still unresolved.

Many people have a lot of downloads going at the same time, and if there is less movement on one file they'll pause it to allow more Bandwidth for another they want more. Some attempt to get quicker downloads by pausing and then resuming, forcing a new connection, as in the first couple of seconds the bandwidth restriction doesnt seem to work (this is offset by the time taken to find a connection, so I dont think it works overall...although maybe on occasion)
Or they may go off line before they've completed downloading from you.
All the Kb's that get uploaded count towards your Participation Level.
If you Leech, you probably will get slower downloads overall, as a lot of people dont like leechers and cut them if discovered. So whoever gave Storrmo that information was talking out of their Arse. The amount of time spent trying to find more connections and getting thrown off, is more than the time lost through your Bandwidth being used for uploads, even for a 56K connection.
Its up to you to decide what proportion of your Bandwidth you want to use for uploading. However I've rarely had my Bandwidth fully tested with the default 4 download/2 upload slots that is set.
As I want to keep my PL steady/on the up, I therefore have 4:4 slots. Sometimes Im dl more, and as my PC is on 24/7, a lot of the time its just uploading. I usually have 1/2 my Bandwidth set as my max upload (although I have to admit to dropping this on those rare occasions that I've really wanted a file quickly, and the fast sources were available) and if I remember, when I'm not dl i'll set it to unlimited....although I usually forget. Such things happen with age :lol:

If you don't share many users (including me) will disconnect you resuting in slower downloads for you.
If you think about it for a minute you will realize that if we all would do as you and not share, your downloads would slow down (really stop).
So please share as this whole system is based on sharing.

Ok, we're agreed we all hate leechers, all take and no give. I'm new to this forum, but not new to kazaa, the old morpheus and napster. Like previous posts have said, the more people share the faster the downloads for everyone, which is why I like the participation level thing, cos I know that the better my PL then I will more often than not get better downloads for everything. In short "It's good to share". What rattles my cage is the people with broadband and similar high speed connections who set there upload speeds to minimum, I mean I just wouldnt bother at all. I have mine set on unlimited, and it doesnt seem to affect download speeds much, still get a nice bit of traffic both ways. So what's the big problem?

I have actually found files via a search and then when clicking the "find more files by this user" icon, I've got "search finished without result." Then have redone the original search finding the same files by the user. The user is *obviously* sharing or I wouldn't have found the files in the first place. However, for whatever reasons, the network will not show the user's files in a search of the user specifically. Basically, not finding files is not proof the user isn't sharing.
I personally *like* to share. I'll often run searches on people uploading from me ... not to uncover "leeches;" but simply with the reasoning that if they are uploading my stuff, they might have similar tastes to mine and I'm likely to find stuff I want among their files. That's how I built up my collection. I started using KaZaA lite about a month ago and currently have over 5Gs in my shared folder.
I do not get upset if I find nothing when searching a user, however. There are many reasons ppl don't share. In fact, many universities forbid it and ask students to disable sharing. I find plenty of ppl sharing and plenty of stuff to d/l.
