GMail open for signups

After almost 3 years.. GMail seems to be emerging out of the Beta period, and have now opened their service up for signups..
Signup on the main page..
Wonder if this is a dawn of any new Googly thingys going round

I saw this on one of my news feeds, but my gmail account still says Beta, so I'm not sure what the hell...+
Also, if you pay attention to Google they usually (and quietly) update their modules and objects. For instance, if you have a personalized page you'll know what I mean.
Google Updates newsletter is slow tho'.

I had a gmail account but i've lost my details and changed address/ISP since creating my account... and when I signed up again last week i got a horrible @googlemail.com address :(
