This is generally done to get their "rating" (participation level) up. The more someone downloads from you, the higher it goes. As you download from other people it does down. If you have a higher rating, you can get a higher download speed on some programs. (the more you put in, the more you get out !)
I ALWAYS compare the title to the filename, and look at the description and artist.
If someone is genuine, they will usually fill in the details, but it is not always the case.
I sometimes send a message to the person too, to ask about it. If they are genuine, they usually reply.
Also, if it's a movie, check on some sites to see if it's actually been ripped yet.

They list all new releases that have been copied and sent to newsgroups.
I've seen about 20 so-called releases of "The Twin Towers" (Lord of the Rings 2), but not one "rip" site has any news about it ! So, how-come people have it to share ?
