Planning to buy a new DVD Writer any good recommendation... (Brand , Model, and Features).... Thanks in advance...:)

Depends on what you want/need it to do.

Other than speccing SATA for my last few builds I don't have any special requirements myself...in fact, given the low cost of HDDs, most of my backup has been to a drive rather than a disk.

As for speed, well, 12x, 20x, etc. sound great but I've never seen the media available for a reasonable price so it's not really a factor, IMO.

DVD burners are commonly available in the $35 range which makes them almost throwaways- like floppies- so unless you have anything special in the way of requirements I'd just get what Newegg has on sale (assuming they ship to the stars...).

I've put NEC drives in my last couple of PCs and never had one go bad on me.

I'd obviously recommend them.

One of them still runs great in a PC that I gave to a friend and the drive is around 5-6 years old.

No special need.... just want to burn all my DVDR files and some MP3 collection...because i do not have enough space in my HDD..

I am looking for a durable one that can last 5 years...

Thanks for all your reply....

stay away from the samsung writemaster series

Actually I was just about to recommend an external DVD burner from this series. I purchased it off of this review:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Samsung-SE-S184M-DVD-Burner-Review/

Almost 150 discs without a hitch (DVDRs with Imgburn using Verbatims)

Curious as to why you say to stay away from them?

# Can only read DVD±R media at 12x.
# Can only read DVD±RW media at 8x.
Writes at claimed 18x, but can't read that fast from the same media?
Need anyone say more?

Or this: http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/gsa-h55n.jhtml

Any Feedback...

You are talking about computer parts, there's no such thing as a spec that won't outdate for a year or 2. Having said that, there isn't going to be much more development on ordinary DVD drives, simply because of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

There's no significant speed difference between 16x and 20x writers, none of them write at max speed over the full width of the disk, and media capable of being written at more than 16x will be

expensive (as pointed out by clocker)
rare as hen's teeth

The same applies to rewritable and DL media, so don't bother considering the drives which claim to be superfast in those areas, you will be paying for performance which you almost certainly won't use.

Here's a list of the one's I'd probably consider.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100005+1036506653+1036906731+4025+1037213801+1037507832+1037413802+1037714697&name=8X
Although they are on the list, I wouldn't personally bother with Sony or Samsung, those are the two manufacturers whose products have let me down, and from their reaction to faults I don't believe they have any interest in helping their customers.

the reason why i highly recommend against buying this drive is that it reads almost NO cd media. so if you wanna use this drive say goodbye to booting off iso discs. for every 20 discs i put in there...it may read one. i am highly unsatisfied with this drive and i wouldn't wish its purchase on my worst enemy....the internal drive**
